MCA-I Has Heart ... and Pluck!!!

by Lee Vogel
President MCA-I

Past International President, Todd O’Neill (San Antonio) sent me the picture to the right to remind me that we have survived tough times before. This was taken at a leader meeting in Los Angeles in 2001.

Imagine the "Mothership" has crashed. It is obsolete and beyond repair. We either spin off the baby ships to become independent colonies or we salvage parts and build a new one.

This is how we started the Leader’s Summit in New Orleans last month. In person and by GoToMeeting the majority of active MCA-I chapter leaders attended. And a lot has happened since. This was an important meeting.

Since then Lois Weiland, executive director of the Madison MCA-I chapter has been hired to cover the phones, mail, bill paying and other administrative duties. Erin Fergusen (Madison) and Donata Renfrow (Atlanta) have lined up a new phone service. Board Member, John Grozik, (Milwaukee) has set up an account with GoToMeeting to handle our Board, Leaders and Committee conference calls. President-Elect, Gary Shifflet (Detroit) and Secretary Laurie Clark (Greater Wisconsin) have moved the association checking account. Past President, Connie Terwilliger (San Diego) has made numerous updates to the website during and since the Summit meeting. President-Emeritus, Mike Brown (Milwaukee) is looking after the archives.

What Will MCA-I Look Like in October?

Just what will the future hold for MCA-I? We'll find out in October. After 40 years providing professional development, opportunities to showcase great work and connecting members around the world - the current model needs to be reviewed and is in the hands of the newly formed Long Term Governance Committee.

This committee is tasked with producing the model of the new MCA-I. Hat's off to: Russ Wojtkiewicz-Kansas City, Wade Holloway-Carolinas. Steve King-New Zealand, Rick Davis-Ohio Valley, Raegan Matthews-San Diego, John Coleman-Orange County, Peter O'Connell-At Large, Buffalo, Dustin McEntarfer-Kansas City, Sandra Olmstead-St. Louis.

New Zealand Home to New Board Member Steve King

One of Steve’s goals as a Board Member of MCA-I is to focus on providing increased value and relevance to 'international' International members.
With the addition of Steve King to the MCA-I Board of Directors, monthly calls are a bit trickier to schedule – he’s in New Zealand – but well worth the effort. Steve, currently Executive Producer - Corporate Television for Screentime NZ, brings more than 20 years of producing, shooting and editing experience in the corporate communications and video production industry and a long association with MCA-I. His favorite, and still used lesson from an MCA-I conference he attended 8 years ago in Orlando was this, “The more you try and tell people in a video, the less they’ll know.”

Steve states his "goals are to work towards more e-learning opportunities for all members - including members remote from a local chapter, and more member benefits available to offshore members. Again online is easiest such as free/discounted subscription to web services and video hosting, and member-only viewing of Golden Reel winners."
