A lot has been happening in the last six weeks since the Chapter Leaders Meeting in New Orleans. As you know, all chapters participating in-person and by GoToMeeting voted unanimously to continue the international association though we were bankrupt. This meant all involved needed to roll up their sleeves and carry a piece of it.
Last month I listed the stalwarts and all have followed through valiantly. We owe them a great deal of gratitude.
The old phone number is gone and by the time you read this. (888) 899-MCAI (6224) will be the new phone number and (888) 862-8150 the new fax. The new phone will take you to voice mail and allow you to leave a message in the appropriate mail box. This will in turn send a message to Lois Weiland, Connie Terwilliger, me or another member handling a specific area. Big thanks go to Erin Fergusson, her husband Chris Frey for helping us with research and set up of the new service. Another big help has been Donata Renfrow from Atlanta who attended our leader’s meeting last February and who has graciously accepted appointment to the international board of directors.
Our cancellation of the contract with The Rees Group, the new automated phone mailbox and the use of GoToMeeting for board, chapter leaders and committee meetings represent significant ways we are cutting expenses so that MCA-I has time to regroup.
Virtually every aspect of how we operate day-to-day has been taken on by one of our members. Some functions have been eliminated, or a new service has been researched and hired out or volunteer members have stepped forward to perform these tasks for the remainder of the 2008.
Meanwhile, yet another valiant group of people have agreed to design the new MCA-I for the long-term. The Long-Term Governance Committee (LTGC) has met twice already and will be designing the model for the new association to commence at the beginning of next year. The individuals are listed just here to the left.
Now it’s time for YOU to step forward and take some ownership. Please contact the members of the LGTC with your ideas as to how to make MCA-I vital to the professional development of every media communicator.
MCA-I Orange County Chapter Webcasts Grow & Change
The LA/Orange County chapter of MCAI continues to experiment with webcasting. “We’re looking for the most efficient and low cost way to webcast our meetings and each month we’re trying something different,” says Grace McKay of Electric Pictures. Grace is the chapter’s webmaster and has been the driving force behind webcasting.
However, the goal is not ‘down and dirty’ production. OC is searching for an easy-to-duplicate, high quality format they can afford. Grace and other members want to have as much production value as possible in every webcast to reflect well on themselves and the organization. Of course, they are taking into consideration that, as an all-volunteer effort with virtually no budget, available equipment and personnel will vary from month to month. For instance, one webcast was done with only one camera live and extremely minimal lighting. A second camera was locked on a wide shot recording on tape then edited into the replays. Another more recent webcast had two live cameras and much better lighting, partly due to the available light in the room.
This will be the fourth consecutive monthly webcast for OC and their most ambitious yet. The meeting on April 15 will stream live on www.mogulus.com/mcaiocas well as be embedded in the chapter’s homepage, www.mcai-oc.org Two of the previous meetings have been constantly streaming on Mogulus but will soon be stored on Amazon S3 for VOD playback through the chapter’s website.
Board Member Brings Web Meetings to MCA-I: Meet John Grozik
"Like many experienced MCA-I members, I became a media chameleon, learning about and discarding such “emerging” technologies as 1/4" Acai reel-to-reel color video recorders, Sony’s 3/4” cassette editing systems, and CED’s (Capacitance Electronic Discs).”.
Continuing our introduction of the 2009 Board of Directors, please meet John Grozik.
John is Chief Innovation Officer for Nth Degree Software, a Wisconsin early-stage company that is developing a suite of tools to improve thinking productivity. John is responsible for product design, web development, marketing, long range strategic planning, and publishing for Amazon’s Kindle eReader.
In 1973, John joined the Milwaukee chapter of the International Television Association (ITVA), now MCA-I. He has been active in the chapter for much of the past 36 years, serving in a number of support roles. In his role on the Board of Directors, John is helping MCA-I explore online meetings, live webinars and streaming live-casts of chapter meetings.
Mr. Grozik regularly speaks at meetings, conferences, and in-service workshops on the impact of emerging communications technologies on society. He has presented a wide variety of futures oriented seminars and workshops for realtors, educators, health care provider, associations, museums, senior citizen organizations, media producers, and corporations.

In the last month, they and their crew have shot the national championships in Australia, Mexico, and Singapore.
But their toughest test is coming up this week. At the US Championship in Washington, DC, they'll have four cameras and ten crewmembers covering all the action. Alliances and rivalries are already forming among the finalists, as some players were upset with how other players played the games during the online qualifying rounds. The 2nd day of the tournament will be held in the Main Hall of picturesque and historic Union Station.
In May, they will be shooting the national championships in the UK and Canada. Over the summer they'll continue profiling national champions throughout the world, all leading up to the World Monopoly Championship in Las Vegas in October.
Orange County meets on the 15th, Dallas meets on the 21st and San Diego meets on the 29th this month - see the Calendar for details. (Chapter leaders - be sure to get your monthly events listed on the Master Calendar.)
