Like many of you reading this, I am looking for 2010 to be the year that turns it around for all of us professionally and personally in our careers and home life. I know so many quality people with great skills and business sense who are without a regular job and income, it is very disturbing to see how the economy has put so many lives and families in turmoil. Here in Detroit, it is probably even more extreme because of the financial issues of the automotive industry. But as those companies have addressed their problems and tried to re-invent themselves, so have the people who are directly affected by these outcomes.
Re-invention is about evaluating a current situation that is not working and trying to find a new way to thrive. In Detroit, new film industry incentives by the state are attracting a whole new business climate that is bringing projects and jobs to our market that have historically not been available to us. As with anything new, there needs to be a process of education and training to make yourself eligible to be a part of these new opportunities.
MCA-I is at this crossroad as well. We have begun to re-invent ourselves with our initiative of being a Chapter governed organization; trying to bring the Local Chapter Leaders into the fold to help guide and lead us into the next decade. With the new 501c3 status, we have created a Committee to research the potential options that are before us. The opportunities to write and receive governmental, educational and privately funded grants could be a monumental asset for MCA-I to help members find new employment and reach beyond their normal market boundaries. And our Benefits Committee continues to research and land new companies to become Commercial Members and provide new and relevant discounted services to our membership to enhance the MCA-I benefits package.
It’s a very exciting time to be part of this re-invention, I hope you all will join me and your Board of Directors to make this a year of progress and success. Take a chance and reach out to one of us to volunteer some of your time and enthusiasm for the cause. There are great needs for assistance in Professional Development, Sponsorship, Social Networking and the Website that could use some fresh hands and eyes to help out. Meet new people and develop some camaraderie; it’s one of the best benefits you can get from being part of the team! The fun has just begun…
