Ken White joined the MCA-I North Jersey chapter in 2011.
What do you do? Give us a little description of your job. I am a freelance cameraman, editor and Steadicam operator. In 2008 I launched K.A. White Productions to serve a growing list of clients. As you can guess, I wear multiple hats. Not only am I out shooting, but I spend all day on the phone, answering emails and taking care other business. Every now & then I can squeeze some editing in there, but I always make my deadlines.
What types of projects do you work on? I work on corporate, commercial, legal and event video productions from pre to post. Clients include major pharmaceutical, beauty and manufacturing companies. I also provide video services for several agencies in the New York / New Jersey area.
How did your previous jobs prepare you for your current position? Before going out on my own in 2008, I worked for a Central New Jersey production company handling the same type of projects I have now. I started there right after college and picked up many of the real world skills needed today to run a successful production company. I was involved in much less of the business end, which allowed me to hone my creative skills. Now the trick is to balance my day. Searching for new business, completing outstanding projects and working on original concepts.
What do you like best about your job/career? I don't have the head for sitting in a cubicle and crunching numbers all day. I like the freedom of the production business. Being on my own has been the best move of my professional career. I can truly say I love what I do and can't wait to start the next project. From the time I was 14 years old, I knew I wanted to be in video production.
In your opinion, how does technology affect our creative opportunities? I am a big tech guy. I like to stay up on technology that can help generate revenue. It is important to find products and equipment that will stand the test of time. You shouldn't get too wrapped up in the gear and not focus on the work. A video pro needs to stay up on what's going on in the industry, but you can't let other peoples choices influence your own bottom line. I know plenty of camera operators working everyday while still shooting with older, standard definition gear. Technology is great, but it doesn't help much if you don't have the fundamental skills and ultimately, the work.
What was the most unusual or challenging project you ever worked on? I think every new project I pick up has its challenges. This is a funny business. Nothing is ever the same from job to job. You have to use all of your experience and sensibilities to achieve the best results. You have to have the head for projects, especially in the corporate video world, where problems can occur at anytime.
I was shooting at a client’s location last month. They set us up in the worst possible situation for video recording. There were windows on one wall, glass on the other leading to the bathrooms, and a VERY loud air conditioning system. I am a glass half full kind of guy. I was able to turn all of these negatives into positives. I actually created a really nice piece because of the challenges presented to me. Due to these limitations, I found myself making decisions that led to an improved composition. One never knows what restrictions will be presented at any given time. In the end the client was happy.
What advice would you give someone just starting out in your field? Internship! Internship! Internship! Every successful professional I know has completed an internship. It is the best way to get your foot in the door somewhere, not to mention the real world learning one can achieve. I was hired by the production company I interned at. This is the best way to get hired after college.
What role does/has MCA-I played in your career? Why do you remain involved? We never stop learning in life. MCA-I is a great way for industry professionals to share techniques, ideas and experiences. I've met some great people and many new friends from the MCA-I group. The speakers we have had at MCA-I NJ, are very informative and interesting.
