MCA-I President

"Every act, whether good or bad, rewards itself in a twofold manner; first in the thing, and secondly in the circumstance."
It is my conviction that MCA- I presents a unique opportunity for media professionals to further develop their careers and personal potentialities.

Devoting one's time to worthwhile causes and purposes without thought of self-gain is one of the highest aims individuals can aspire too. While this may sound rhetorical for some of us, I would like to ask that you consider the following paraphrase, from Emerson’s Universal Law of Compensation: ... A perfect equity adjusts its balance in all parts of life. Every act, whether good or bad, rewards itself in a twofold manner; first in the thing, and secondly in the circumstance. Cause and effect, means and ends, seed and fruit, cannot be severed; for the effect already blooms in the cause, the end preexists in the means.

My interpretation of this essay is that by giving freely and unselfishly of one's time and energy, that we must realize a direct (or indirect) benefit, and even more importantly that this law is inviolable. By deliberately choosing to help further the purposes of a good cause; one cannot help but realize personal benefits and gain. While the benefits will not always be monetary, they most assuredly will be significant and noteworthy to the personal and spiritual development of the individual.

MCA-I has a rich history serving the needs of media professionals. We can make MCA-I the professional membership, and a place where we can go with confidence that our peers will support us, as we support them. I challenge each and every one of you to take personal responsibility to make MCA-I the very best that it can be.

Make a commitment to invest your time and effort into furthering the initiatives and achieving the objectives of the organization, and you will be rewarded in measures of personal fulfillment that only unselfish acts can bring to fruition. Doing little things each day, and even one small thing; when a large group of people are inspired to do so, are the acts that will give the organization a mighty and unstoppable momentum.
Today is the day – do something for MCA-I today.

One of my goals for the organization in 2012 is to increase membership by 25%. Please tell your friends about MCA-I – let’s make MCA-I the top organization for media professionals.

" ...there's something special about MCA-I and getting together to spend time in the same room as locals who are in the same line of work as you – ... helping someone else figure out technical issues that had been plaguing them. MCA-I takes time and dedication, but it's worth it, every step of the way. ."
Randy Lee is currently a member of the Madison chapter of MCAI.

What do you do? Give us a little description of your job.
I'm a freelance shooter / editor / colorist.  I've been known to work as a DIT  as well, and have a reputation among locals as the guy who can solve whatever problems they can come up with.

What types of projects do you work on?
Most of my work is on documentaries. I also enjoy working on commercials, corporate videos and other projects.  I work fairly regularly on short films and spec spots with some of the local up-and-coming film people, and I worked as the DIT for the Hulu original series, Battleground, shot in Madison in fall of 2011

How did your previous jobs prepare you for your current position?
I spent 5 years working for a production company before I started freelancing. Starting at the bottom, working in the machine room, then moving up to shooting and editing gave me a great understanding of workflow that I see missing in a lot of young people. Working for a place that turns out one project after another after another, I learned to be efficient, got to know broadcast standards and how everything needs to fit together, not to mention organization. I never expected to freelance. It just sort of happened when I got to the point of so many people calling and offering me more money than I was making. Now I'm knee-deep in more amazing projects than I can count!

What do you like best about your job?
I get to live vicariously through fascinating people every day. I never know what's going to be next – whether it's a short film in New York, a piece on homelessness in Madison, or a spec commercial that needs snow that magically appears in a blizzard the day that we're set to start shooting.  The stories I run into and the exciting places I get to work make what I do more fun that I could have imagined.

In your opinion, how does technology affect our creative opportunities?
Technology has opened up opportunities for talented, ambitious people to get into the industry at a lower price point than previously, but it has also allowed less talented people to afford the same gear, and be not only our competition, but also to influence peoples' opinions of the gear that we use.  This is great in that it doesn't take mortgaging the house to buy a new camera, but it means that you deal with a $1400 DSLR being called as good as film by people who don't know any better.  You live with it, learn to use it better than the other guy, and get ready to learn to use the next tool when it comes along, too. At the end of the day, though, a cut is a cut and a good looking shot is a good looking shot. Technology doesn't change that.
