ProTrack Proves Professionals Plan, Produce and Party!
"The sessions were very informative with excellent speakers and the Leadership Conference was full of new information and stategies for building a stronger organization both internationally and through local chapters. On top of all of that, the MCA-I people know how to have a good time!" Jeff Gelder, President Elect, San Diego Chapter
According to MCA-I media pros who recently attended the ProTrack 2008 Conference at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Anaheim, California October 31 – November 1, it was worth its weight in California gold. (Post a Testimonial on the MCA-I Facebook group).
Attendees were producers, directors, editors, web designers, writers and multi-media professionals from across the United States and many other countries including: Canada and New Zealand. “This was the perfect way to celebrate MCA-I’s 40th anniversary,” said Lee Vogel President of MCA-I. “We’re a chapter driven organization and we retain just about every new conference attendee because they make a real connection with people here, then go back home and participate on the local chapter level.”
This year’s two day sessions lined up like a “Who's Who” of media experts with headliners like consultant and DVD author Jan Ozer, trainer/instructor Bruce Nazarian, national trainer for Adobe Kevan O’Brien, corporate podcasting expert Marcelo Lewin and Video Resources’ Chief Gearhead Brad Hagen.
See photos from some of the ProTrack sessions, the Halloween Party and the 40th Annual MCA-I Media Festival on the website photo albums. More photos taken by attendees have been posted by the Facebook MCA-I Group Members.
If you took photos, please take a moment to upload them to the Facebook site or the International website. And post a comment to the Facebook group while you are there. Spread the word!

Jeremy Markowitz is currently a sophomore Electronic Media Production Major at Kent State University located in Kent, Ohio. In high school, he worked for the South Euclid Lyndhurst City Schools as the assistant department director of their production company, AVTV Productions. Past President, Connie Terwilliger, San Diego, receives the 2008 Chuck Webb Award
The MCA-I Media Festival Awards Presentation reveals the winners of the coveted Golden Reel, but it also honors members of the association who devote countless volunteer hours to keep the association moving forward. In addition to the Board of Director's, President's and Shining Star Awards, MCA-I's highest honor is the Chuck Webb Award.

MCA-I's 40th Anniversary celebrated during the 40th Annual Media Festival Awards Show
Silver Award winner and MCA-I Board Member Steve King presents Kai Gottlob with one of his two Golden Reel Awards
The 40th Annual MCA-I Media Festival was held Saturday night November 1st, 2008 at the Anaheim Hyatt Regency. In addition to presenting several service awards to our dedicated volunteers, the other stars of the show were the media professionals who submitted entries into this acclaimed competition where we honor the best in media communication from around the world.
Traveling the furthest tp pick up a Silver Reel Award was International Board Member, Steve King from New Zealand. Also in the long distance category was Kai Gottlob from Germany who attended with three of his clients to accept two Golden Reels. It was pure coincidence that Steve in his capacity as a board member, was the one who presented Kai with his awards.
It takes a village. And MCA-I is lucky to have dedicated volunteers who work together to plan and execute their plans. Each year during the annual MCA-I Media Festival Celebration, we honor our volunteers.
This year's Board of Director's Award went to Dr. Alan Richardson (At Large - IN), a active member since 1979 who continues to support MCA-I. Dr. Al has had a presence locally and Internationally on various MCA-I committees and is extremely active in education and student endeavors. He served on the International Board of Directors from 2002 to 2006 and served as International President in 2005. Dr. Al plans to continue his efforts to get the word out to students about the importance of relationships for business and personal growth.
The President's Award goes to Gary Shifflet from Detroit. Gary has been president of his chapter on three different occasions, organized a golf tournament to support the adopted charity of his chapter for numerous years, and orchestrated judging for his chapter’s video awards many times. He has also (sometimes simultaneously) coordinated the judging for our international Golden Reels, started and orchestrated the G. Warren Scholarship two year’s running, has been instrumental in revising our association by-laws, and served several years on the MCA-I international board of directors in several capacities. This year, when our international President-elect was unable to serve, Gary stepped-up to finish his term.
Member Profile:
Bill Dolan
"Instead of saying we are a video production company, or even a services company, we bundle what we do under the heading of creative. We don't just live around tactics, we hopefully live around results."
Bill Dolan, Spirit Media, Clackamas OR, is gifted with a talent for expressing himself very convincingly. And that’s good because he’s got quite a story to tell. Like the main character in an epic movie, he evolves as the plot unfolds. During his career, Bill has transitioned from production guy into a big picture guy, moving forward in the food chain. Why has he been successful at reinventing himself, while most of us just keep trudging along in the same trench? He can take a hint. Bill heeds the signs, and he’s not afraid to take the fork in the road. He knows which one.
As an Emmy-nominated TV Producer and Director, Bill has directed international broadcasts, produced live events for up to 250,000 people and has acted as creative director for Fortune 500 companies to small organizations throughout the United States. As author and speaker to audiences around the country, Bill is recognized as an authority in the foundational principles of compelling marketing communications, strategic messaging and brand integrity.
BD - We're a creative agency. And when I say a creative agency, it means we really try to take a holistic look at how people are connecting. What are the messages and who are the messengers? And what are the results they want to achieve? And of course that starts with great strategy, but ultimately comes down to ... what are the ways we can do that?

Associations Struggling Across the Board
by Lee Vogel
MCA-I President
"...What is it that holds our association together?
Camaraderie."
No question. These are difficult times. They are especially difficult for associations. Professional associations, such as Ad Fed, AMA, AIGA, even for the ABA. Service organizations are suffering as well. Just ask service stewards such as: SERTOMA, Lion‘s Club, Rotary and Kiwanis.
Volunteerism is down nationally. Our culture is changing. Hours of the day that used to be spent doing business face to face is now done electronically.
It’s amazing that our association is still around. We’re celebrating our 40th Anniversary. Yes that’s 40! I find it especially amazing as our profession began over 40 years ago as a homogeneous group of video producers, employed by corporations. Since, it has exploded into a diverse galaxy of specialists, serving many different markets and needs as consultants, freelances, contractors and some remaining in the in-house department.
In many ways, our diversity is our strength. Like successful companies, we have evolved, embracing new technologies and responding to changing market and cultural trends. At the same time, it has become more difficult to identify who comprises MCA-I to prospective professional members, commercial members and sponsors.
Overall, our numbers are shrinking but there are exceptions to this trend. John Wasylko has spent the last six months building a new NorthEast Ohio Pro-Tem chapter which now boasts almost 30 members. Jim Dufec, a longtime member and professor at South East Missouri University, is employing our new floating student category and has 26 undergraduates registered with us.
So what is it that holds our association together?
Camaraderie.
Camaraderie, founded in a shared passion for the craft of electronic storytelling.
