Real World Filmmaking from Indie
(Or how a group of social dinners
The August meeting will be a mixed bag of topics, as award-winning filmmaker/director, Mick Garris, shares his 30+ years of experience as a Hollywood Horror-Movie director, writer, producer and actor. Join us for an evening of viewing film clips, discussing techniques, Q&A and the business of making movies and TV…even analyzing failures.
The meeting will begin with the opening from the Emmy Award winning TV series, The Stand, written by Stephen King. Garris, who directed the series, will talk a bit about how the opening was made.
His first movie business job was as a receptionist for George Lucas’ Star Wars Corporation, and Garris will talk about where he went from there. There will be opportunities for attendees to ask questions. More clips will follow – including some behind-the-scenes footage from The Master of Horror Series, the idea for this show coming about as a result of several social dinners with fellow horror movie directors. Garris will elaborate on the business angles of putting that Showtime series together. A box set of the Master of Horror Series will be up for grabs at this month’s meeting.
Some excerpts from the indie film Riding The Bullet, will follow and Garris will share his insights on why this particular project bombed.
Mick Garris has come a long way from his beginnings as a receptionist for the Star Wars Corporation. He’s worked in film publicity at Avco Embassy and Universal Pictures, where he created the “Making of…” documentaries for various feature films. Steven Spielberg hired Garris as story editor on the Amazing Stories series for NBC. Other notable works written or co-written by Garris include: The Fly II, Hocus Pocus, Critters 2, and teleplays such as, Quicksilver Highway, The Others, Desperation, Nightmares & Dreamscapes, and Fear Itself.
He’s directed and produced for cable, TV films, network miniseries, and series such as: Sleepwalkers, The Shining, She-Wolf Of London And Fear Itself.
He’s worked with some of the most famous names in the fear-film genre: John Carpenter, Tobe Hooper, George Romero, John Landis, Dario Argento, and many others. Garris is currently prepping a feature film based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel Bag of Bones.
