In Memoriam: Edward Lee Collins

Edward lee collins

Edward Lee Collins passed away November 1, 2005 in Cary, North Carolina. Lee served as Director of Video Communications Services at N.C. State University until his retirement in 2003.

Lee was the first WebMaster of ITVA.ORG. He was also an active part of ITVA and MCA-I for many years, serving as the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill chapter president in 1993, and as an ITVA Region 4 Vice-President in 1994-95. He was also involved in several Carolina Silver Reel Award committees, and webmaster of the RDC Chapter web site until 1998.

I was so saddened to hear of Lee's death. I had the great pleasure of working closely with Lee for many years in his role as RVP and also in his role as the head web-launching guru prior to Kenan's able stewardship.

Lee was the sweetest and most patient person. When many of us were trying to understand the very concept of a "listserve" and the "web" Lee would patiently explain (for the 4,322 time) how it worked, what it could do and what it could not do well. And he'd smile while he did it.

Lee was one of the reasons we invented an international award - the Volunteer of the Year award in 1995. He was an honoree the first year we gave the award, along with Michael Danese. I know he was very active at the chapter level, but many of us around the U.S. (and Canada) grew to know and appreciate him as well.

I will send condolences to his family - but also offer my condolences to the RDCH chapter. You have lost a great friend.

In 1994, I built my first website, the 150 page Houston Chapter website, with support from Lee Collins. Lee was my mentor in the classic sense, not only in web construction, but in the leadership culture of MCA-I.

He was graceful, attentive, patient, and dedicated to making a difference in our profession. With his encouragement, I volunteered for webmaster and the Board of Directors.

Lee's dedication to MCA-I has been a role model for me now for over 10 years. I think of him oft
