A Member Profile By Dennis Regan, Writer and Voiceactor MCA-I Member, San Diego For thousands of patients with developmental disabilities, Bob Kemper is a good friend. As coordinator of media services, he served them for 30 years by documenting their care and providing a practical training tool to help prepare the caregivers who looked after their needs at the OBerry Center in Goldsboro, North Carolina. DR: Bob, your particular service is rather unique amongst MCA-I membership - serving in the public sector in a healthcare facility. How did you happen to get the job? BK: I answered an ad in a magazine. It was the Journal of Mental Deficiency. DR: Not too many of us would have a copy of that on our coffee table. BK: I was at Central Wisconsin Center. Some folks in the library caught that ad and said Bob, this would be perfect. You can get off the soft government grant money and go for the hard money. I said it sounds good to me.
40 Years Later Early MCA-I (ITVA) Leaders Meet in Las Vegas

Back row, left to right: Steve Kultala (Pres. 1984-85), Jeannie Tasker (Vice Pres. 1978-79), Gib Gibson (Pres. 1977-78, Billy Bowles (Pres. 1978-79), Al Bond (Pres. 1979-80), Lynn Yeazel (Pres. 1973-74). Front row, left to right: Bob Passaro (Pres. 1976-77), Kal Edwards Raasch(Pres. 1975-76), Ron Brown (Pres. 1981-82), Rita Sansone (Pres. 1982-83). NOTE: Empty chair, far left, front row for the late Bob McEmber (Pres. 1974-75), and for Chuck Webb, lifetime member and mentor of all. It was pure coincidence but indeed the stars were aligned the evening of February 18, 2008 as some of the very earliest leaders of MCA-I (ITVA as it was called when they were leading) gathered in Las Vegas for a long talked about reunion. Calling themselves the Old Fs, they have maintained contact over many years, primarily via email. The list of attendees read like kind of a Whos who of the early ITVA. All but one a past president of ITVA, and that one exception served as a regional director and...

MCA-I ProTrack - What's the Value to Me?

by Steve King, Auckland, New Zealand MCA-I Board of Directors International Relations Chair My favourite, and still used, lesson from the last MCA-I conference I attended was this, The more you try to tell people in a video, the less they’ll know. I was introduced to the MCA-I about 20 years ago, when it had a New Zealand chapter of over 400 members. The first national conference I attended here in New Zealand ran a number of seminars over 3 days, had guest speakers from the US and England, a trade show and finished with an Media Festival Awards banquet and party on the final night. The following year, I convinced my boss at the corporation where I managed the newly established video department (as well as produced, shot, edited, etc.), to send me to New Orleans for my first ITVA International Conference – a trip which shaped my future career. Returning home inspired, and with a concrete business plan for the department, I proceeded to expand and develop it to...

Your Attendees are on a Great Candids Video by Mark Schulze Crystal Pyramid Productions’ top videographer, Mark Schulze, shoots Willie Nelson and Darryl Hannah at the National Biodiesel Conference & Expo 2006 in San Diego. Courtesy: Crystal Pyramid Productions I first learned how to edit about a hundred years ago (or so it seems, given the exponential rate at which technology has advanced) on half-inch linear machines. That meant that if you finished editing a half-hour show and spotted a mistake at the beginning, you would have to start all over again. It was a time-consuming and cumbersome process that did not lend itself to many of the applications so commonly used today, such as, for instance, candids videos. With the arrival of mobile nonlinear editing systems, the genre of candids — aka happy-face — video evolved, and it’s become routine at many corporate events.
MCA-I: Professional and Proud of It

by Lee Vogel President MCA-I 2008 From time to time members who have long belonged to the association seem saddened by the fact that our numbers are no longer in the thousands like they were in the 1980s and early 90s. What they forget however is that 1) most of those memberships were paid by corporations employing the members and 2) many of those members were not actively involved in the association. Today we are about 800. Most of us are entrepreneurs. As such, most of us are paying our dues out of our own pocket. The time we take to volunteer, to go to meetings- is time we don’t get paid for unlike the majority of corporate producers of yesteryear. I recently experienced three things over the course of one day which brought home the value of membership in this association. Our local Kansas City MCA-I meeting was a presentation of experiences using the P2 format. It was a small group, nine or so. There would have been two more except projects came up at the last minute...

Levitt 1946 - 2008 It is with great sadness that we announce that Joel Levitt, the founder and president of Action Duplication, passed away Saturday morning, April 26. As many of you knew, Joel had been fighting a brain tumor for the past year. A story about his life appeared in the Philadelphia Daily News on Monday, April 28, 2008. We have set up a page on our website where you can leave condolences, thoughts, prayers or memories for Joels family. Action Duplication’s employees and Board Members remain committed to the ideals and goals Joel worked so hard to achieve since founding the business. In his memory, we remain dedicated to providing you with the same high quality and customer satisfaction ethics that he instilled in us.
Forgotten Airplane's Take Wing Once Again In Screening By Atlanta MCAI Moviemaker

The distribution for this rare DVD about vintage airplanes begins with the screening.

"At a time in the shadow between the World Wars, the usefulness and reliability of airplanes in peacetime was questionable. So aircraft companies would show off their airplanes in the annual “National Air Tour.” In its time, this traveling parade was quite popular, showing off the potential of aviation to a wary public.” said Mr. Panayioto.

Seventy years later, a group of pilots came together with restored models and flew them on the same 26 city route as a part of the “Centennial of Aviation.” This story centers on their Atlanta stop. These aircraft live today thanks to the remarkable efforts of these determined aviators.

“Rare Vintage Air” is the second episode in the Forgotten Wonder’s Series, independently produced by Mr. Panayioto.
In Memoriam: Erik Villesvik

MCA-I member and Secretary of the OC/LA Chapter, John Erik Villesvik, died suddenly on March 24, 2008 of a massive coronary. He was 53. Erik’s passing was a shock to his family, all of whom lived outside California, as well as all his friends and associates in MCA-I. He had recently returned from an MCA-I National Leadership conference in early March, where he made new friends with representatives of many other chapters from around the US. Information about what happened was very sketchy at first to his local friends and colleagues. Meanwhile, hundreds and hundreds of emails burned up the internet between members of the MCA-I and others in the media production community. All expressed shock and sadness at his passing and praised him in many personal stories. Then we heard from Erik’s family about a service. An evening memorial service was held on April 2nd in Santa Ana, California. It was well attended by family and friends. Erik’s mother and two of his sisters...

I'm so glad I caught The WAVE! I once again attended MCA-I Madison chapter's annual award show, for recognition in Web Audio Video Excellence (WAVE). I've been a member of this wonderful community for nearly a decade now, and currently serve on the board as Student Liaison. Ironically, I have been a member since I was a student myself! MCA-I helped me advance my own career and exposed me to our wealth of local talent over the years. Now, I am a part of our industry as an instructor at Madison Area Technical College, and MCA-I helps me keep up to date with the latest technology to teach, supplies me with presenters for my classroom, and serves as possible internships and jobs for my students. So, this year at The WAVE Awards I had a group of my students with me at this event - to help connect them with future employers, and to give them an idea of what the professionals in our area can do. In addition, two of my students won the first two scholarships that our chapter has offered, and their acceptance of their large checks, both literally and physically, brought tears to my eyes. In addition, several other students were recognized in the student categories, and all were recognized and congratulated by the professionals afterwards. Seeing that interaction between my students and their future was the best award that I could have received. I am very grateful for my Madison chapter of MCA-I, and everything that it does for our community and industry!

The love that the members have for this business, on an international level, is incredible. They are highly caring, friendly, and talented professionals. They come from corporate environments, small shops, large agencies, and many are independent professionals. And we all make our living by building great creative, networking, and just having fun.

MCA-I ProTrack 2007 in Milwaukee! What a great time. The sessions were great, as usual. And it was wonderful to reconnect with friends from all over the country and make a bunch of new contacts.

From dawn to way past dusk, we were learning the ins and outs of new techniques and technologies, power networking, and generally have a ball. A couple of sessions left many of us with our jaws open in amazement at the future of communications. It certainly has given me a lot to think about and some new tools to take the next steps as we move into a new reality. Oh, and the weather was unbelievably beautiful in Milwaukee, too

I've been in the media communications business since the late 70's and have seen a lot of changes, but never so fast and furious as right now. One of the best ways to stay on top of the trends is to come to professional development conferences like MCA-I ProTrack.

Let the evolution begin! I can't express my joy enough from watching the new generation of MCA-I Leadership develop their new relationships and form a bond that should be the nucleus of our future successes. Their energy and enthusiasm was contagious! How many of us found ourselves out late past our bedtimes, shakin' our tail feathers at the Safe House and feelin' our oats while hanging out with this new, young and energetic group? And it wasn't just about the fun factor, these young'ns contributed great ideas to our Leadership Conference and really appreciated their opportunities during the ProTrack sessions. Our experience in Milwaukee was fantastic on so many fronts, I applaud our fearless leader Mike Brown, the Board of Directors and everyone else who's efforts contributed to the success of what I consider one of the best Conferences MCA-I has ever hosted. Congrats to all of us!

Once again -- the first time was at the board retreat in January 2007 -- I was struck by how much talent, generosity, and can-do energy we have as a goup. It's no wonder MCA-I is on the comeback trail, re-emerging as an important network for media communications professionals. ProTrack reaffirmed my pride in our team. Additionally, and for the first time in a long time, we had a strong contingent of twenty-somethings at the leadership conference, people with new ideas and the drive to implement them. It was truly exciting. The challenge for those who came to ProTrack will be to convey to those who didn't the hope and excitement we experienced, and to make them want to invest in the new MCA-I.

Since the ProTrack Conference, I’ve been “pitching” ways to re-purpose content that my company has already produced. Several of my clients are very interested in the podcasting & webcasting information I’ve brought back. Also, beyond the “creative boost” one experiences being around other chapter members and the seminar experts, I realized the network of contacts I’ve made will be great resources for one of my upcoming original productions that will require me to travel across the country.

Among other things, this association gives me the opportunity to step away from my own frenetic/sometimes rewarding/often confusing world to spend time in the company of my peers and reflect upon what I've been actually doing. It is not a process of conscious scrutinization, but more the luxury of being among others who apply this craft of electronic story telling as I do. Hanging out with these professionals not only validates what I do and believe, it's a rejuvenating break from being in the company of strangers (clients) who don't always "get it." I even got a new idea or two. When we have our faces buried in our work every day, it’ difficult to get the perspective to gauge the value of our creations. And, after all, isn't our true purpose-not so much what we create-but the effect it has on those who experience it? ! Our association conference allows us that critical perspective. All us craft-folk get to sit together, shoulder-to-shoulder, and step away from our daily tedium to really examine if what we have done actually serves the purpose for which it was intended. This conference (ProTrack '07) was our most effective in this century. Way to go MCA-I!
