43rd Annual MCA-I Media Festival Judging Underway	Media Festival Judging has commenced! The entries are in, processed and beginning their voyage to judging panels throughout the country! This year’s entries totaled over 100 candidates, with the winners to be announced and presented at the 2012 MCA-I Media Festival Awards Show in Las Vegas, Saturday April 14th at the Rio Casino Hotel. Please be advised - there is a great likelihood that Whirrly The Sacred Blender will make an appearance at the Awards Show. As soon as we are able to narrow the results down to our Finalists, our potential Winners will be notified so they can join us for the festivities in Vegas. MCA-I will be offering hotel and Awards Show packages, with an opportunity to join us for a golf outing on the 15th at the Rio Secca golf course. Also, the first 75 people who sign up for the package will have an option to get a free exhibit pass to NAB at the Las Vegas Convention Center starting Monday April 16th, courtesy of our friends at Grass Valley. President's Report: Thank you! Don Glass MCA-I President	Now that the elections are over, and the new board for 2012 is in place, I would like to personally thank each and every one of you for being members of MCA-I. As President this year, I consider it an honor and privilege to serve our esteemed and benevolent organization. I am working on an agenda for the new year, 2012, and with final Board approval hope to release it for your review and consideration. There's some interesting new data recently released by the ASAE, the Center for Association Leadership, pointing to a connection between earning more and greater job satisfaction with individuals that belong to a professional associations. Moreover, Daniel Pink's book "Drive, The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us," presents a convincing and compelling case for finding fulfillment and happiness in pursuits where money is not the primary consideration. Specifically, Pink references innumerable case studies where volunteer work through a non-profit organization led to greater satisfaction and higher earnings. MCA-I is not so big that I cannot reach each of you directly, with a vision for 2012, which I plan to do over the course of the next few months. Thank you again – I am looking forward to serving.

What do you do?
I am a voice talent and writer.

Give us a little description of your job.
Quillsongs Media & Publishing, LLC is my company for production, ad concepts, copywriting, jingles, voice-over, audio production, editing and public speaking. Each week I write a weekly column, “Poetizing Life:” for a local newspaper in Missouri, and am also a freelance reporter for another local online news source in the rural Missouri area. As a freelance writer I have done everything from feature stories on local news events to writing as a food critic for some of Missouri’s fine restaurants, movie reviews, featured local entertainment and more.

I do a lot of voice over work spanning from audio narration for books to radio and TV commercials to PSA’s to e-learning modules. I imagine this coming year I will be doing a lot of political VO. Much of my work is not just US based but world focused in areas such as India, China and Australia.

I work from home home in my studio and office. With the convenience of the computer, interviews can be done via e-mail and Skype, yet getting the story live is always more intimate and interactive. I do the voice over’s in my home studio, edit, master and then send off to clients all over.

What types of projects do you work on?
My voice has a mid-west, neutral, North American, smooth, nostalgic, youthful and friendly sound, so my voice-work projects tend to lean into that.

My heart is in writing my column each week, “Poetizing Life:” where I take a look at our everyday lives and muse its lessons, create stories, write poetic prose and poetry about it. Personally, I am working on several volumes of poetry that I soon hope to finish and a “Best of Poetizing Life:!” volume. I will self-publish these in audio, book, and e-book form. I am also working on an audio story-book for children.

How did your previous jobs prepare you for your current position?

I worked as a customer service and in house sales representative for a major radiopharmaceuticals company some years ago. The training I received with them was extremely valuable. While listening to others from all over the country through the years I was there helped in learning dialects, which is vastly helpful in VO. As always, good customer service is important in any business so that too is a positive carryover and an area in which I pride myself. Through the years I have had various sales positions and personal business ventures with each experience giving me good business sense and wisdom in marketing skills.

What do you like best about your job/career?
I love working for the people of my own community, as well as the interesting people I work with from all over the world-people I never thought possible to work with and for. Also, I love the challenge each job brings with it the constant change that it requires, creating an evolution of self and knowledge. I love that I can work from home, on my own terms, and be paid well for what I love to do. For me focus is important when working on something; as a perfectionist it’s all about quality-finding myself engrossed in what I do which makes time just fly by! My schedule helps keep my creative edge healthy too. There is a saying, “Do what you love, and the money will follow.” That was not always true for me, but dedication to my craft has become very rewarding in every sense of word.

In your opinion, how does technology affect our creative opportunities?
When I was young I tried to attend college. I was newly married, a new mom with no daycare, no car, and no typewriter. Despite my juggling and wholehearted attempt, I failed out, and spent years paying back those school loans. I always knew if I just had the right tools and the right opportunity I could have had a better chance at succeeding. I am now a lifelong learner! As a creative, technology and how to use it is a powerful and edifying thing! Technology brings about creative exploration, execution and delivery. The computer has been more than just an object to work on it has become an extension to my creative life. As a writer it expedites work. As an artist, it allows me to grow my artwork and photography. As a voice talent, it allows me the freedom to be my own audio engineer giving me the power to create emotional movement and interactive involvement into another world-sound. I never thought at my age I would be able to dabble in filmmaking or script-writing. I have a goal one day do to a documentary. I waited and returned to school at the best point of time in history at age 40. I learned video on the most up to date technology in my field. In 2010 I attained my BA in Mass Communications from Lindenwood University. With only 7% of filmmakers being woman; I am challenged to seek my goal.

What was the most rewarding project you've worked on and what made it so rewarding?
This past year I was honored to be a part of a charity founded by a fellow voice actor and on air personality, Jeff Gelder called: Children’s Holiday Magic Project (see http://holidaymagiccd.com/). Each year since 2003 Jeff Gelder has produced a fun audio CD to give to ailing children in Children’s Hospitals all over the USA and abroad during the holidays. His mission statement is “to brighten the lives of children of all ages through the gift of songs and stories” and that is just what he does. Various people submit their original audio or “Theater of the Mind” audio pieces, and then a board selects the best. This year my children’s story, “The Legend of Star Children” was selected. As an unexpected surprise I received the “GelderHead Productions Award of Excellence for Creativity and Generosity!” in the form of a plaque bearing this year’s CD too! Our own Children’s Hospital here in St. Louis, Missouri benefited from this program as well, which was wonderful!

What was the most unusual or challenging project you ever worked on?
The most challenging project I have worked on was for the family of a friend who passed away. They requested that I do the audio of her life story and sync it up to the video pictures of her through-out her life. Emotionally it was difficult because I had to remain unemotional while doing the voice work, which was almost impossible.

How did you handle it?
I had to remove myself from the moment and pretend to be outside myself, being as dispassionate as I could.

What advice would you give someone just starting out in your field?
When I started out in the field of voice-over, I asked someone rather well known in the field how long would it be before I might be successful. His response was this, “If you are TO BE successful, it will be at least 10 years …” and went on to describe the roadblocks and trials of voice acting and then ended with this: “...When you get into this business you do it for the love of the art-not for the money. If you do this, you will be rewarded.” He was right. It is a passion you wake up to and fall to sleep with. For me it is both writing and voice-over. It is an extension of me that motivates me forward.

As for writing, being a great writer is not always the question, nor is being perfect writer either. If you have a passion for it let nothing stop you from its muse. Being able to connect to your audience with your own special voice and being diligent at sticking to it what is important. As far as the exposure of your writing to others, you have to be focused in getting the word out that you exist, many times being your own agent, marketer, and business person. The world of publishing today is changing like no other time in history, you are the zeitgeist; you make your own destiny. Do not stop, do not be afraid, and do not end by challenges- go forth and keep knocking.

Is there a role model or mentor who has impacted your career choices? If so, please describe.
My mother. She is a writer, my inspiration, and my mentor. When I was young falling asleep in my bed, being in the next room over from the kitchen table, Mom as a nightly homage would take out her manual Smith-Corona typewriter and- as a lullaby- type me to sleep as she wrote. She spent her entire life writing, sending, and filing rejection notices, then honoring the sacred ones of acceptance in another file. She wrote 6 books. Her life was in many ways a dedication to the act of never giving up on your dreams; writing being her friend and therapy. It was the act of writing her soul-words: her poetry-that helped her grow through tragedy.

Another inspiration was my singing and voice teacher, Dr. Ray, who told me very young, “Heather, you have a gift of voice, never stop sharing it.” I haven’t yet.

What role does/has MCA-I played in your career? Why do you remain involved?
MCA-I puts me in touch with a community that cares and works well in their field, giving me a huge available knowledge base to tap into. It is a great resource for networking in, learning from and staying in touch with. It brings together a diverse knowledge base of people who share their passion and love for what they do. I remain involved because that is where I can grow, learn and be a part of a greater good within the media community I so dearly love and “Pass it forward” anytime I can.

Anything else you’d like to address about your livelihood/career?
I want to thank MCA-I for this opportunity to share about my livelihood and career. It has been a long road but because of others who shared their experiences I was encouraged to go after my dreams. They helped me gain confidence in declaring that no matter how old you are, you can make your dreams come true…even if you get a few bruises and scrapes along the way…it is very much worth the journey! I hope that somehow, someone else is also encouraged.

One day I was looking through the dictionary trying to find some specific definitions for a project I was working on. -what I discovered were some interesting points.

For integrity it said, "see Chuck Webb", for dedication the reference was "see Chuck Webb" . Moving on t checked the word mentor, and again it was, "$ae Chuck Webb". There seemed to be a pattern developing so I checked out several other words. There it was after honest, after friend, teacher, leader, futurist, humor, caring and enthusiasm, among others, "see Chuck Webb".

You say your dictionary does not have these same references, well it must be because you did not have the very special privilege of knowing Chuck Webb. For the many people who had the pleasure and honor of being able to call Chuck friend, they all have this style of dictionary.

It has been my pleasure to be one and to talk with many of his friends. It is my hope that by Sharing the thoughts of these people that you will understand why there are so many unique dictionaries around.

Chuck Webb became known as "Mr. ITVA" , a title well earned. But, he was not always, especially when he began life in 1922 in Brooklyn, New York. The schools of New York City provided Chuck with his education. Somehow he found his way to Iowa during World War II and worked for several radio stations. He wrote the news, delivered the news and sold the commercials. He knew what it was like to work in a small operation where you had to do everything.

Well, Creston is in Iowa and it is there that a very special thing happened to Chuck, he met Ruth. Everyone needs someone to travel the road

of life with and Chuck found his traveling companion inCreston. It was not always an easy road and there were some pretty big pot holes, but they pulled through them.

Long before his lTVA friends began making a living in television, Chuck was helping a fledgling industry get started. While working for KVOA radio in Tucson, the station started a television station, As Ruth says,

"He was a natural and became a local celebrity, even though he said people wanted TV so much they'd watch you stuff mattresses. l>

Carl Moyer recalled conversations with Chuck about those earty days.

"He was in Tucson when they went color and he remembers pushing color sets for some television dealers in town. We talked about how he would convince television dealers to let people take TV sets on approval, on the expectation that once they had it and tried it they wouldn't give it up."

While a pretty good visionary, I doubt that even Chuck would have predicted the computer usage we have today, but in the mid 1960's he was already getting involved with computers and the beginning of what we now call the digital revolution. It was this interest that brought Chuck and Ruth to northern California. There he worked with some of the very early pioneers in the computer industry and it is there that Chuck met Carl Moyers. Carl set up VlDICOPY, one of the country's first video duplication houses.

"I started Vidicopy and shortly thereafter I hired Chuck on a handshake agreement to be my marketing advisor, consultant I think was the word we used~ and we had a 30-day agreement that lasted for something like 14 Of 15 years."

"this is the first time I have taken on the responsibility of starting a business and meeting a payroll and all the things that go with it. And there is tremendous amount of advice, support that r got from Chuck in doing these things. And I would say that he was probably the single most imP9rtant factor in Vidicopy being successful".

"The thing I liked most about Chuck was his willingness to be very candid and not just tell me what he thought I wanted to hear,"

As Chuck became involved with the ITVA he received a great deal of support from Carl. Many of us assumed Chuck actually worked as an employee for VIDICOPY, but we were wrong. This was a special relationship between two good friends. Chuck was a "consultant" and they worked together for a long time on a hand shake.

One of ITVA's early Presidents was from the San Francisco Chapter, Chucks' Chapter as 'Well. Kal Raasch knew him from both the local and the national perspective .

.. . " what impressed me most about Chuck was he was a good mix of a people person and a technical person. He wasn't one way or the other and that impressed me the most. He was able to talk about equipment very succinctly as he was able to talk about people development needs and he was very interested in people in the industry who would really be able to make a contribution.

"Besides having a great sense of humor, he was always there when you needed him. He was always there to share ideas with. He was a very creative guy. He had a lot of problem solving abilities and that's what I remember most about him ..... A great sense of humor, a great listener, just really able to synthesize problems quickly and resolve them. n

Kat also experienced the visionary aspects of Chuck as he had his picture of television and its role.

"Well, I think his vision was he wanted the medium of television to reach out and be as flexible as possible. He wanted all kinds of uses of television and to be as creative as possible, but he also had the instructional concept behind it that it shouldn't alt be bells and whistles, that there should be an instructional content that went along with it.

1 think if there was a word to describe him and his vision, it was to maintain the soul and integrity of television."

At Bond was one of ITVA's early Presidents with the good fortune to have Chuck's support.

"In ITVA's early days we were youngsters in the industry. Chuck was the 'old head' -- the cool, calm, father-figure. He helped bring ITVA into the world. He pointed our association's leaders in the right direction."

"We made mistakes, but he didn't judge us. And just like a father, he helped us make it come together."

Chuck had a way of making anyone he spoke to feel special. He had the ability to focus his undivided attention on you and for that moment, make you his priority. It didn't matter whether he knew you personally or not, according to Past President Rita Marie Sansone. It was this ability that helped take the ITV A across the ocean to the United Kingdom.

Ian Winter then of Barclays Bank recalled that, "Chuck Webb was the guy who went East. He brought the ITVA to the UK. He was the first to really show that ITVA members in America cared seriously about promoting our industry and they would also extend themselves to assist us."

Chuck served as the first Membership Director and served several Presidents including Bob Passaro,

"He was a warm-hearted salesman, without all the negative qualities associated with friendly salespeople who aren't sincere. He was genuine, just what we needed in a Membership Director. A good thinker, with a good sense of fairness."

Larry "Gib" Gibson, past President and ITVA's 'Thomas Jefferson' for his work on the ITVA Constitution, benefited from Chuck's dedication.

"I always felt that Chuck always went the extra mile for ITVA, whether you agreed with everything he did or not. There was no question in my mind that his bottom-line interest was in seeing the success of the association."

Rita saw this first hand when she was Nominations Chair in 1978. Chuck was making a sales call on AT&T and it was crunch time for the ballot mailing.

"So, of course, as I'm putting all the labels on, trying to get these 5,000 ballots out, AT&T sprung and hired two temps to help me, Chuck blew into town. He just happened to be there and we stayed up all night; the two temps, Chuck, and I processing these ballots. But the thing was Chuck just had these two little girls in stitches. He was just cutting up left and right all night long, so • mean it was, I don't know, to me it was just Chuck, you know, fun times with Chuck. You know, he comes in on a sales call to my boss and instead rolls up his sleeves and does ITVA work."

From the far north came one of 'lTVA's early leaders, Vern Aker. Working in Toronto at a time when the ITVA was expanding into Canada, Vern and Chuck came together.

"I got involved in starting ITVA in Canada, you know, with Toronto

particularly ........... and got to meet Chuck and, of course, with his

enthusiasm and exuberance he was a wonderful missionary. He wanted Canada to grow and develop and I helped in that a little bit. And I really looked at it as an opportunity to professionally and creatively grow, that's why I got involved with the association. And it was mainly due to Chuck. I mean, it was hard not to do things when he asked actually."

Vern not only became involved with the ITVA in Canada but he also served the entire association as Treasurer. This was early in the ITVA's history when knowing if there was enough money in the bank to pay the rent was an important element of the treasurer's job. It was interesting that a Canadian who had trouble understanding the Canadian revenue laws had to help prepare U.S. I RS returns.

On one occasion all the documents were sent to Vern in Toronto. Neatly packed in a satchel, Vern tied them to the back of his motorcycle and headed home. You guessed it, when he got home no ITVA financial records.

"And there was nothing, .... so I had to go back to the office and phone Chuck and say, "I'm never coming to the U.S. again, because J just lost everything," and you know, in Chuck's inimitable way he just kind of calmed me down because the heart was beating a bit fast after all and he said, "Well, we've got copies and we'll go get them certified and there's ways around it and, you know, think of it as a natural disaster, you know, buildings burn down with records in them so you have a Plan B." But it was, it was interesting. It was a bit frightening and enlightening all at the same time. That's just, that's just how we got to know each other."

"He was a mentor not only in his own ability to provide guidance and be a shoulder, .... but I think he was also a mentor in hooking people up with people. A third party mentor, if you will, and being able to say, "Okay, Vern, go talk to Ron Brown or go talk to Bob Passaro," or, "I've got somebody over here you should meet. He was able to connect people."

Another person with a San Francisco connection is Jeannie Tasker. She served as an early President of the San Francisco Chapter and later served as tTVA Vice President and Board member. Jeannie and Chuck became very close friends through their service to the ITVA, a friendship that helped Jeannie grow professionally.

"There's barely a day that goes by that I don't think about him by person, some of his influence, it was just. .. A lot of who I am is because of his mentoring. And still now, I kind of wish he were still around so I could say, Hey, look at this."

For several years it was Chuck and Jeannie that put together the Video Festival Awards video. They spent many hours at Vidicopy assembling the various clips into a solid representative video.

"It took hours to watch all the award winners and we'd have a good healthy debate over which was the best dip to use. We'd walk out of there after the weekend blurry-eyed and wondering how we could ever do this again -- till the next year -- when Chuck would call me and say, 'I don't suppose .. .' And J'd respond with, 'When.' I know it was not just what I learned from watching all those tapes that kept me coming back. Rather, the quibbling over clips lead to thought-provoking discussion about our industry. Chuck had a keen intellect and many incites into our future. I'm grateful to have drawn upon his wisdom. to

Billy Bowles remembers Chuck's role as a leader and motivator while developing chapters either in the U.S. or across the ocean or the U.K

"You know he was our leader and motivator. He was the motivational speaker at the chapter formation meetings. He was like our evangelist, if you will"

"He was always available and when you had a question, if it had to do with history or it had to do with procedure or had to do with current activities he was just always so well informed. He had such a network. I know I called him many times to get the lay of the land or the feel of the Executive Councilor the Board or whatever the case may be because he was so wired in. That was something he did but he didn't share any privileged information but he sure would give you a good overview of what the lay of the land was.

You know, it was not like you had an event, one single event with Chuck. It was an ongoing relationship."

Bob Passaro relates how Chuck became involved with the ITV A at a meeting in 1973.

"That was when he worked for CVS and he was pitching the high-speed duplication system, contact duplication system, at that meeting and they were having a tot of problems with the system .. But everybody couldn't help but be impressed with the guy because he was so nice. The next thing I know, he's talking to Lynn Yeazel (ITVA’s first President) and Lynn talked to me about it, He said this guy Chuck is talking about what we ought to do for the association and we ought to do this and we ought to do that. He said he was just laying out all these wonderful ideas. Lynn finally looked up at him and he said, "Why don't you put your money where your mouth is?" He said, "Well, Lad, t guess you're right." And that was the beginning of his association with us."

A few years later Bob would be ITV A President and would have the benefit of Chuck serving as Membership Director.

"He assisted me in so many ways. He was my voice of sanity. I would call him whenever I had a really naughty problem and seek his advice and he would always sit down with me on the phone and reason the thing out and try to look at all the possible avenues. n

As I talked with so many of Chuck's friends to compile this I was constantly reminded of how Chuck guided me as he did others. Coincidence placed me in San Jose on July 1, 1981, my first day as ITVA President. I was able to have dinner with Chuck at the airport and as we looked out at WW I airplanes, we discussed the up coming year. As he did so \Yell, he was able to highlite possible challenges and growth opportunities not just for the ITV A but for me personally. It was a special evening, one that has stayed with me for many years, and will continue to be special. like the people quoted here, Chuck was my mentor, my teacher and my friend. Rita Marie Sansone summed it up in a tribute to Chuck in 1987 published in the INTERNATIONAL TELEVISION NEWS.

"Chuck always had a genuine concern for his colleagues. Many of us owe a portion of our success to him. He served as our "idea sounding-board", "father confessor", career counselor and just plain friend. He was the ultimate professional. Chuck Webb was "Mr. ITVA" and all of us who knew him, as well as all lTVA members, will be affected by him - for his spirit of contribution wit! long live within the ITVA. As Vern Aker so aptly put it, "Everybody that still owes Chuck an IOU should help someone new in the business, in remembrance of him. Because everyone should have a Chuck Webb in their life."

President's Report: Create a Video about Joining MCA-I and Win Cash Money for your Chapter! Gary Shifflet MCA-I President	As sad as it is for me to write this, you are reading my very last President’s report as my two year term ends on January 1st. It has been a pleasure and an honor to have led this organization through some difficult times, hopefully to the end result that we are a stronger, smarter and more invigorated association than we were when I started. From a financial standpoint, I know we are in a much better place. From a membership position, I believe we have continued work to do to better promote MCA-I and attract new members and leaders into our fold. That is an effort I can assure you will be a continued promise from me as I ride off into the sunset…but not too far from our continued efforts! One thing I’d like to ask of all our Chapter Leaders and memberships is to make a strong effort to create a promotional video that answers the question: “Why MCA-I?” that we are going to use and showcase at our Media Festival Awards Show in Las Vegas in April. We are going to play these throughout the show program, and ask all attendees of the event to vote on the best of the best. We are planning to award the winning Chapter $500, with the second place Chapter being awarded $250. We are also planning to host these on the International website that will be re-launched in January to help promote both on the International and Local levels. What a great team building exercise to have for your Chapter! And the money’s not bad either! The Media Festival entry deadline is just a few days away, please be sure to enter your best work for the chance to win the coveted Golden Reel Award for yourself and your clientele. What a great way to showcase your work to an International audience! It’s an opportunity you just can’t afford to miss. President's Report: Time...The Ultimate Challenge Gary Shifflet MCA-I President	As many of you now know, I was forced to cancel and re-schedule last week’s Leadership Conference in St. Louis. It was something that weighed heavily on me. I was dealing with some significant family issues, but the thought of having everyone who committed to the Conference arriving and participating in a less-than-adequate Leadership experience was something I didn’t want to be responsible for. Your commitments to join us is something I take very seriously, I want your experience to be valuable, memorable, and one that makes you consider joining the ranks of Leadership. Unfortunately, I was not going to be able to provide that under the current situations. All that being said, we are considering dates to re-schedule the Conference. We are targeting February and making arrangements with our friends in St. Louis to make that happen. We had a wonderful ½ day workshop session with a group from The Switch scheduled, they have agreed to do it again for us when we pick the date. I want to thank our friends Gayle Gallagher and Vanessa Roman from the St. Louis MCA-I Chapter who’ve worked so hard on preparing our event and social experience while we were there. Hopefully, we can get everyone who originally committed to the Leadership Conference to re-book with us, as well as others who now may have the time and motivation to join us this next time. Thank you again for your understanding and kind thoughts through this very challenging time for me and my family. And please keep an eye out for the notice when we re-schedule the Conference in February. Have a great Thanksgiving holiday weekend!

Connie Terwilliger Past President	You know, we mentioned this last month, but it really can't be stated enough - getting involved in a professional association is one of the best things you can do for your career. Yes, we all have lots on our plates, but something that pays off in so many ways is volunteering time in a professional association. MCA-I is an all-volunteer run association. We have a part-time Executive Director who handles membership duties and tries to keep us on the right and proper path now that we are a 501(c)3 group. But the rest of the board and all of the other chapter boards are volunteers. So we need you! In fact, the new 501(c)3 status opens lots of doors for our members and that means more opportunities, including the chance to receive grants for production. Grants mean money, which helps you keep your doors open. The Nominations Committee is currently accepting and recruiting people to serve on the 2012 MCA-I Board of Directors. I was hired by the City of Tempe right out of college. I received my BS in Telecommunications and Film at San Diego State University. It was an intense program where students weren’t allowed to work while in school. A typical one-hour lab was actually 10+ hours a week. Their program was all hands-on which, after graduation, provided me a resume with three years of OJT (on-the-job-training) – no theory-based education here.

What do you like best about your job/career?
The opportunity to create and think outside of the box.

In your opinion, how does technology affect our creative opportunities?
Technology is the means by which I can produce, acquire, and deliver my products. It is ever-changing which makes continued education a must if you’re going to survive. Look at social media – what an opportunity to leverage and expand your audience.

What advice would you give someone just starting out in your field?
Learn every element of the production process and be proficient in everything. A lot of employers are now looking to hire full-time, cross-trained employees – the day of the “one man band” has come full circle. At Tempe 11, we only have three full-time employees (including myself) and each of us do it all (from womb to tomb) except for being the content expert. That is usually our project client. Each of us possesses strengths and weaknesses and we lean on each other to create and deliver the best product possible.

Is there a role model or mentor who has impacted your career choices?
In 7^th grade I had to write a letter to an employer requesting career information. I mailed the assignment to the local NBC affiliate and requested information on how to be a camera operator or a news anchor (I wanted to hit both sides of the camera). To my surprise, they invited me down for the day to hang out and be in the studio when the news went live! As they say, that was the beginning of the end. So, I’ve always had a “personal connection” with Channel 12 in Phoenix – they ignited my creative flame.

As for leadership mentors, John Maxwell and Bill Hybels are my two contemporaries. Neither of these gentlemen are in the multimedia/video production field, but they each have a way to inspire and challenge my abilities and talents on a daily basis.

What role does/has MCA-I played in your career? Why do you remain involved?
Networking, networking, networking. Your circle of influence and professional contacts will challenge and inspire you on your career journey. You have to make “deposits” in the “bank” to ever get a return. Rarely does one experience true success when they go at it alone. MCA-I has been a key element of my career foundation and success since I joined almost 25 years ago. President's Report: See You in St. Louis? Yes! I'm Talking to YOU! Gary Shifflet MCA-I President	Is it really only 3 weeks until the Fall Leadership Conference in St. Louis? There are so many plans to make, agendas to develop and finalizing our roster of attendees who will be joining us. Are you on the list? Are you considering joining us? If the answer is "I'm not sure", let me try to convince you. Since 2003 when we last visited St. Louis, I have attended every Leadership Conference. Once I became a regular, and a prospect being recruited for Leadership positions, I have learned what many before me have discovered: the MCA-I is an organization comprised of wonderful people, with common goals and interests, who utilize the benefits of the organization through their careers and relationships they have developed over the years. I can honestly share with you that some of my most meaningful long-term business and personal relationships have started through MCA-I events involving travel to new cities, meeting and working with people on projects with shared visions and a goal to improve the future of this Association. We gather to hear presentations on MCA-I specific topics and brainstorm on ways to make us a stronger organization. But along the way, we meet new friends who have the same passion and interests, and inevitably create bonds that last for a very long time. We have created some of the most memorable experiences with our legendary post-conference social activities, the kind of things we can share for years that motivate us to get together as often as possible. For a lot of us, conference gives us the only opportunities where we can plan annually to resurrect our posses and break out the dancing shoes! And yes, I DO have moves! With the help of our friends in the St. Louis Chapter who are hosting us, we plan to create many new and exciting memories. I just looked at the current list of attendees this year and see many familiar faces from years past. And although there are new names to this year's Conference, I believe there are many more out there who would realize huge benefits of adding theirs to it. If you are waffling on the decision and could use a dose of motivation and purpose, make the call and give yourself the chance to make a difference. I promise there is a place for you to contribute in St. Louis, and guarantee you leave with at least a dozen new friends for life! Please make the call to join us.

What do you like best about your job/career? The benefit of owning a business is the flexibility of your time. When I’m working, it’s usually pretty intense for a brief period. Craig J. Campbell, of Video Soup LLC, has been a member of MCA-I’s Kansas City chapter since he began his career in 1990. He became a life member in 2007.

What do you do? Give us a little description of your job.
I own Video Soup LLC, a modest video production company based in Lenexa, KS. As a one-person operation, I manage every project and produce, direct, shoot, and sometimes edit. I’m fortunate to work with a talented group of local freelancers.

What types of projects do you work on?
We produce corporate marketing and training videos as well as do field production for out-of-town corporations or production companies who need content captured in the Kansas City area.

Prior to 2007 when I became self-employed, I spent 13 years at a mid-size, family-owned industrial company called IBT where I managed their video production department. Gaining experience in management, sales, marketing, and a wide variety of video production aspects allowed me the confidence to venture out on my own, for which I am truly grateful.

What do you like best about your job/career?
The benefit of owning a business is the flexibility of your time. When I’m working, it’s usually pretty intense for a brief period. However when I’m not in production, I choose to spend more time with my family or volunteering in my church and community.

In your opinion, how does technology affect our creative opportunities?
I don’t consider myself a technology guru. Rather, I appreciate how improved technologies have dramatically changed our industry, both in terms of how we produce content but also how it is distributed. High-quality and efficient distribution options have inspired my clients to produce content which of course generates income for me, and the lower cost to entry has allowed me the opportunity to own equipment that I certainly could not have afforded ten years ago.

What was the most rewarding project you've worked on and what made it so rewarding?
Every project is rewarding to me because each one means so much to my client. But free enterprise and capitalism has allowed me the opportunity to be generous. Because I can earn an income from corporate or broadcast productions, I choose to donate services to non-profit organizations so they too can benefit from the power of video communications. These projects tend to be especially rewarding.

What advice would you give someone just starting out in your field?
Video production is not the easiest industry in which to make a living regardless of the current economic climate. I encourage anyone new at this to be proactive in their networking and be open to doing the most remedial production jobs in order to gain experience. You show a positive attitude and strong work ethic, the money will follow.

Is there a role model or mentor who has impacted your career choices? If so, please describe.
Rick Raglow is a corporate video producer here in Kansas City, and I tell him “thank you” just about every time we see each other. I was his intern at Sprint during my senior year in college when he recommended me for a full-time position. That opportunity became my first job, and I’ve been gainfully employed ever since. Rick has been an inspiration for numerous video professionals in the Kansas City market.

What role does/has MCA-I played in your career? Why do you remain involved?
I realized the value of professional networking very early in my career, and at that time ITVA was the organization to join. In the 1990s I held a few leadership positions with the local chapter. Today I try to attend MCA-I networking events as they are scheduled. It’s only when we are sharing ideas and experiences that we can truly grow as an industry.

Anything else you’d like to address about your livelihood/career?
I feel strongly about the value of internships, and I encourage video professionals to consider offering an internship program to increase the number of college or high school students who can develop an interest in our profession. In addition to hosting interns at my company, I started an annual scholarship in 2008 at my alma mater that helps pay a student’s travel expenses during an internship.

President's Report: Meet Me in St. Louis Gary Shifflet MCA-I President	The fall is upon us fast and furious, and your Board of Directors are working feverishly to put together the final touches on several initiatives. Your 2011 Media Festival Call for Entries will be going out this week, with details for the competition and the Awards Show to be hel in Las Vegas in April 2012. Deadline for entries will be November 15th, with judging to begin in December. If you are interested in hosting a judging panel, please contact me directly at gary@kineticpost.com . The Fall Leadership Conference will be held on Saturday November 19th in St. Louis. This all day conference will bring together Leaders from all over the country to discuss the state of the Association and create strategies to move into the next few years. A half day training seminar is being developed for Friday afternoon November 18th, so please consider flying in on Friday morning to take advantage of this opportunity. Details will be distributed very shortly, and the Association is developing packages for assistance with travel and accommodations. These conferences have historically been breeding grounds for new Leadership development and our future Executives on the Board. Speaking of the next generation of Leaders, the Nominations Committee are currently accepting nominations from our local Chapters for the 2012 Board of Directors. Positions to be filled are President Elect, Secretary and 3 At Large Board Members. If you have an up and coming Member in your ranks with great leadership potential, please consider nominating them for a position. And definitely try to send them to the Leadership Conference in St. Louis to meet their peers and get involved with the Association. The experience of face to face meetings is becoming an endangered event scenario in this day of social media, but the value in developing new and long lasting relationships is a trademark result of attending our Leadership Conferences. Technology is just a tool. It is secondary. Our creativity lies between our ears.

What was the most rewarding project you've worked on and what made it so rewarding?

The most rewarding project that I worked on was the 100 year celebration of a company. The client wanted a ‘movie’ that all of the employees could sit and watch in a rented theater with a bag of popcorn. So we made a nearly one-hour movie with actors, locations, dialogue, costumes and historic re-creations. It was truly fun. It was supplemented by huge displays in a public space. It took us nearly one year to complete and it was worth the effort.

What was the most unusual or challenging project you ever worked on?

The project was a 90-minute CD-ROM for pharmaceutical reps to teach them the ‘Anatomy and Physiology of the Brain.’ It was challenging because every fact (nearly every sentence) had to have a documented reputable source. It was fun because I was able to include animated brain teasers and games to illustrate the functionality of different areas of the brain.

How did you handle it?

Tons of research and mountains of paper. It was a team effort with MCA-I members in four states.

What advice would you give someone just starting out in your field?

Networking is hugely important. I would also recommend having a goal to work towards (own your own company, run a division, win a screenwriting Oscar, invent a camera gizmo) so you know where you’d like to go rather than just take any job that comes along. Work towards a goal and you’re more likely to get there.

Is there a role model or mentor who has impacted your career choices?

I lost touch with him when he moved to Florida, but his name is Mark Youngquist. He was a role model because he freely shared information at all times. If he had a cool in-camera technique, or hot new actor/graphic artist/editor, he would always share that information with me or any other colleague. He didn’t keep good resources close to the vest, but shared them. His philosophy was that good work would raise the bar or the standards for everyone and that good people should be recognized. His favorite editor went on to edit a cute little sci-fi movie called Avatar. I’ve always tried to follow Mark’s lead in that respect and am always glad to pass along a referral or recommendation. For years Mark was my first call for help. Today I have a number of people who fill that role, and in turn, I am that mentor and resource for others.

What role does/has MCA-I played in your career? Why do you remain involved?

There was a point in time when I could point to 95% of my clients as tied to MCA-I (I still call it ITVA in my mind). I think it helps to be active in leadership, not just a dues paying member, although that has its own benefits. I remain involved, in part, because of the SEO visibility that comes from the MCA-I website. It’s pretty powerful.

Anything else you’d like to address about your livelihood/career?

Be flexible. Keep adding new tools to your tool belt.

The MCA-I Nomination Committee is searching for candidates for the 2012 International MCA-I Board of Directors.

As chapter leaders have discovered, the International Board is composed of member volunteers who want to help keep the association moving forward to serve all of our chapters and At Large members. Clearly we all have lots on our plates, but volunteering in a professional association pays off in so many ways.

Getting involved is a great way to build your network, gain valuable experience in leadership skills, and participate in the traditional good times. We have a part-time Executive Director who handles membership duties and tries to keep us on the right and proper path now that we are a 501(c)3 group. But the rest of the board and all of the other chapter boards are volunteers. So we need you - or someone you know.

And our Halloween gathering at the beach in Newport was too much fun. I also wanted to express my thanks for receiving the Chuck Webb Award this year. And to cap it off, I won the Grand Door Prize from Adobe. It was a super weekend.

For over 20 years ITVA and then MCA-I conferences have been the most valuable, enjoyable, and memorable part of my association with the members who make it up MCA-I. The local chapter conferences and get-togethers (or WetNets as we called them, a name probably borrowed from another Chapter I’m sure) are a smaller scale but just as important part of the value that, I believe, members get from being involved with others in their industry. I returned home from that MCA-I conference with a fresh, new approach to my work and memories of a great holiday. I'm so glad I caught The WAVE! I once again attended MCA-I Madison chapter's annual award show, for recognition in Web Audio Video Excellence (WAVE). I've been a member of this wonderful community for nearly a decade now, and currently serve on the board as Student Liaison. Ironically, I have been a member since I was a student myself! MCA-I helped me advance my own career and exposed me to our wealth of local talent over the years. Now, I am a part of our industry as an instructor at Madison Area Technical College, and MCA-I helps me keep up to date with the latest technology to teach, supplies me with presenters for my classroom, and serves as possible internships and jobs for my students. So, this year at The WAVE Awards I had a group of my students with me at this event - to help connect them with future employers, and to give them an idea of what the professionals in our area can do. In addition, two of my students won the first two scholarships that our chapter has offered, and their acceptance of their large checks, both literally and physically, brought tears to my eyes. In addition, several other students were recognized in the student categories, and all were recognized and congratulated by the professionals afterwards. Seeing that interaction between my students and their future was the best award that I could have received. I am very grateful for my Madison chapter of MCA-I, and everything that it does for our community and industry!

MCA-I ProTrack 2007 in Milwaukee! What a great time. The sessions were great, as usual. And it was wonderful to reconnect with friends from all over the country and make a bunch of new contacts.

From dawn to way past dusk, we were learning the ins and outs of new techniques and technologies, power networking, and generally have a ball. A couple of sessions left many of us with our jaws open in amazement at the future of communications. It certainly has given me a lot to think about and some new tools to take the next steps as we move into a new reality. Oh, and the weather was unbelievably beautiful in Milwaukee, too

I've been in the media communications business since the late 70's and have seen a lot of changes, but never so fast and furious as right now. One of the best ways to stay on top of the trends is to come to professional development conferences like MCA-I ProTrack.

Let the evolution begin! I can't express my joy enough from watching the new generation of MCA-I Leadership develop their new relationships and form a bond that should be the nucleus of our future successes. Their energy and enthusiasm was contagious! How many of us found ourselves out late past our bedtimes, shakin' our tail feathers at the Safe House and feelin' our oats while hanging out with this new, young and energetic group? And it wasn't just about the fun factor, these young'ns contributed great ideas to our Leadership Conference and really appreciated their opportunities during the ProTrack sessions. Our experience in Milwaukee was fantastic on so many fronts, I applaud our fearless leader Mike Brown, the Board of Directors and everyone else who's efforts contributed to the success of what I consider one of the best Conferences MCA-I has ever hosted. Congrats to all of us!

Once again -- the first time was at the board retreat in January 2007 -- I was struck by how much talent, generosity, and can-do energy we have as a goup. It's no wonder MCA-I is on the comeback trail, re-emerging as an important network for media communications professionals. ProTrack reaffirmed my pride in our team. Additionally, and for the first time in a long time, we had a strong contingent of twenty-somethings at the leadership conference, people with new ideas and the drive to implement them. It was truly exciting. The challenge for those who came to ProTrack will be to convey to those who didn't the hope and excitement we experienced, and to make them want to invest in the new MCA-I.

Since the ProTrack Conference, I’ve been “pitching” ways to re-purpose content that my company has already produced. Several of my clients are very interested in the podcasting & webcasting information I’ve brought back. Also, beyond the “creative boost” one experiences being around other chapter members and the seminar experts, I realized the network of contacts I’ve made will be great resources for one of my upcoming original productions that will require me to travel across the country.
