Sometimes it seems an impossible task, balancing work, family, play and association duties. We do the best we can. One lesson we seem to learn repeatedly is to not try to tackle too much or things will be left by the wayside. Today I am asking for a couple of volunteers to help manage our Benefit offerings. Member Profile: Raegan Matthews

Raegan Matthews is a member of the San Diego Chapter, serving as Treasurer.

What do you do? Give us a little description of your job.

I am a Producer at heart, but my current title at digital Outpost (dOP) located in Carlsbad, CA is Supervising Producer. I oversee DVD based/online training projects from inception through delivery. In addition, I like to get out and write, shoot, direct and edit projects when I can.

What types of projects do you work on?

I mostly work on long form and short form law enforcement related training projects. I am also Associate Producing the local Emmy’s this year and just finished working on a documentary about craft beer in San Diego called, “Suds County USA.”

Behind the Scenes with SAS’ Big Data Guy

The sun was barely over the horizon on a cold Saturday morning when a caravan of vehicles drove across the SAS campus. The vehicles were full of camera equipment, lights, props, and the all-important catering supplies to keep everyone well fed. Work was about to begin on shooting of a series of spots featuring Big Data Guy (BDG). Before the day was done, equipment packed, and food exhausted, a crew from SAS’ Video Communications and New Media (VC&NM) team completed shooting three spots highlighting how SAS can help organizations take advantage of the massive amounts of data they collect.

What do you do? Give us a little description of your job.

What types of projects do you work on?

How did your previous jobs prepare you for your current position?

Before dOP, I was working in marketing at direcTV and before that- learning about film distribution/ marketing at Regent Entertainment. These jobs have taught me “what to do”- and definitely what “not to do” as they relate to my current position.

What do you like best about your job/career?

What’s great about our industry are the people. I work with a solid group of individuals that I can count on, and that is

key with what I do. Creative minds and great attitudes combined with follow through are why our clients love us.

In your opinion, how does technology affect our creative opportunities?

Without current technology, we would not be able to do our job the way we do it now, period.

It greatly affects the ebb and flow of our business, both creative and otherwise.

What was the most rewarding project you've worked on and what made it so rewarding?

It is hard to pinpoint one project as the several I have worked on for the past 5 years are training related and ultimately geared towards saving lives. The more challenging they are, the more rewarding. However, back in Los Angeles I worked on several features but “Dumb and Dumberer” was probably the most exciting.

What was the most unusual or challenging project you ever worked on? How did you handle it?

A few years ago I was asked to shoot and edit a project for a local non-profit bike organization; the challenge was that it was a two-day race up to Newport Beach and back (almost 200 miles round trip). They wanted all of it covered and you guessed it, they wanted a volunteer. In addition, they wanted to show the footage from the first day at a dinner on the first night, so I packed all of my gear and headed north. Once I covered the race portion of the first day (riding in the back of a pickup truck), I sat down to load footage and edit as fast as I could. I ended up playing the video at their dinner from my timeline in FCP, (this saved me a lot of export time). Needless to say I was up at 6am to do it again the next day.

What do you see as important skills/character traits for people starting out in this field?

Working hard and being on time are the two most important traits one can have. Get these two nailed, and people will notice the rest.

What role does/has MCA-I played in your career? Why do you remain involved?

When I moved to San Diego in 2006, I came to a meeting and felt right at home. Over the years, I have connected with talented and hard working individuals, at both the local and International level. Honestly, this has kept me involved from the beginning.

Anything else you’d like to address about your livelihood/career?

I now have an 8 month-old baby, and while I love being a mom, I still love what I do with work. It has been tough balancing the challenges of home and career, but I still plan on doing both indefinitely.

Behind the Scenes with SAS’ Big Data Guy

Long before the last edit was made, before the first scene was shot, before the scripts were even written – there is the back story. The project started as a challenge issued by Bill Marriott to his VC&NM team. The challenge, each quarter come up with a unique idea for a project and drive it through to completion. “We have a lot of highly creative people in our group, but the day-to-day work of the department often demands quick delivery on tight timelines. This project was an opportunity to empower the team to do what they do best, create compelling content that delivers the SAS message.”

A Visit From Big Data

As in most things, nothing happens until someone takes ownership. Taking up Bill’s challenge, Brendan Bailey proposed creating a series of spots using the classic TV formula of Conflict & Resolution. “Many commercials use this formula. It provides an opportunity to pose a problem and offer a solution. The issue of big data fits this model. It’s a challenge, but also a great opportunity; with the answer being SAS.”

A series of brainstorming meetings followed which resulted in a dozen script treatments. At that point the team ran into an impasse. The outlines all treated the BDG character differently. “We lacked a clear understanding of who we wanted this character to be,” explained Todd Johnson. “So we spent some time debating the character and wrote a back story

With a clearer understanding of the character, the question remained, how well would he work? David Stephenson took the lead and drafted scripts for three initial spots. “The character somewhat wrote himself. As the scripts came together the creative team focused more on content and creating spots that were flexible enough to use in different ways.”

Big Data Knows That’s A Stolen Credit Card

The team continued to debate how long to make each spot and if released to YouTube whether length mattered. At the suggestion of Bill Marriott the team decided to work toward the length of standard broadcast commercials. “Building standard length :15, :30, and :60 second spots added structure to the process. The constraints of a blueprint can often help focus energies on the best way to make something happen.”

Scripts complete – check. Locations secured – check. Talent hired – check. The day of shooting finally arrived. It was time to see how well BDG would work in delivering the SAS message about big data. From dawn to dusk the crew and on-camera talent wandered around Building C collecting the footage needed to create the spots. Gary Peterson and Mark Lawrence managed the day-long shoot. “It certainly wasn’t our usual day of shooting,” said Lawrence. “Even though the final spots are short, they require a lot of material. We had only the one day to get all the shots. We knew we weren’t going to have the chance to grab extra shots later. It had to be done right the first time.”

Now complete, the spots are posted to the SAS website and in use at customer events. The response has encouraged the production team to begin work on another round of spots. Given a blank canvas and creative freedom, it’s amazing what a creative team can deliver.

Top Student Entry in 44th Annual MCA-I Media Festival Receives G. Warren Scholarship	MCA-I is pleased to announce the recipient of the G. Warren Scholarship for 2013. This year, the scholarship goes to the entire production team at Central Michigan University for their production titled “A New Mutant.” Instructor Eric Limarenko accepted the certificate during the MCA-I Media Festival Screening and Service Awards Party held on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 in Las Vegas NV. G. was the recipient of the esteemed 2003 Chuck Webb Award for her outstanding voluntary service to MCA-I. As a teacher herself, G. felt strongly about the need to share our craft and the joy of teaching our young and emerging professional members. President's Report: Another MCA-I Opportunity to Learn Brian Alberth, Madison Chapter	If you've ever been to Las Vegas, you know how much there is to see, do or take in. I am extremely impressed with how much we accomplished in two short days – it was energizing, informative, exciting and just plain fun. There is something about getting together as a large group to reconnect and revaluate our organization's goals. It's hard to believe that two weeks have passed already since we met. We had great representation from Chapter Leaders from all over the country, the Board, as well as a fantastic student and Media Festival turnout. There were committees formed that will look at creating more students chapters, as well as resurrecting a few of those chapters that have gone dormant. We're also working on a partnership with another professional organization, more MediaProCamps, new sponsorships / benefits… so many great things so please read your eNews to follow these future developments. We would love your input on when and where to have the next Leadership Conference so that we have another year with a strong turnout. Right now, it's between Cleveland and San Diego - sometime in the Spring. So, if you think you would like to attend the next Leadership Conference, please contact us. We also realize that our International board can only be as strong as the people that want to be a part of it. I had that, but when I joined ITVA, now MCA-I, I had hundreds of mentors not only locally but internationally. What do you do? Give us a little description of your job.

My current title is Vice President, Media and Public Relations for Shelby Electric Cooperative which is a member owned electric distribution cooperative.

What types of projects do you work on?

Advertising, coordination/marketing of a hot air balloon program called Touchstone Energy Hot Air Balloons, merchandising and cold air balloon program. I also coordinate all the advertising and marketing for Shelby Electric Cooperative and two of its subsidiaries - PWR-net a broadband internet solution, and Shelby Energy servicing people’s LP gas, bulk oil and whole house generator needs. The monthly member newsletter is another one of my assignments and I have video equipment that allows me to work on video projects. In addition, I am also a videographer for hire through the cooperative. I have worked on many projects as set up crew and then run video camera for various projects that are broadcast for satellite or fiber project and worked on some ag shows as camera crew.

How did your previous jobs prepare you for your current position?

Skills sets used on various other jobs helped me in the development of my current position as did the schooling I had all the way back to senior year in High School at Washington Community High School, Illinois Central Junior College and then Illinois State University. I held various jobs at radio stations, TV stations and corporate TV departments.

The variety of work keeps things interesting – I guess my favorite thing to do is run a video camera.

Technology enhances our job and also creates new income potential with the vast array of distribution channels and also gives us newer avenues to showcase our work and vastly increases our reach into other regions of the country.

What was the most rewarding project you've worked on and what made it so rewarding?

I’d say two videos I did early on in my career. A 30 minute TV show with a local Springfield, Illinois TV station on the Special Olympic Winter Games in Galena Illinois and the other would have been while at the Association of Illinois Electric Cooperatives when I did a video for Big Brother Big Sisters of Sangamon County. What made them rewarding was just seeing how people come out and volunteer and the passion people have for helping out those who need help and support. As a matter of fact after the BBBS video I later went on to become a Big Brother.

What was the most unusual or challenging project you ever worked on?

I’d have to say the most unusual or unique project was flying over the Continental Divide in a Hot Air Balloon as part of a Guinness Book of World Records flight where 15 hot air balloons launched from Breckenridge Colorado and flew over the continental divide. I was videotaping the flight. A few years later I actually saw a small clip of my video of the Touchstone Energy Balloon and others flying the divide on a weather channel show about great rescues or something like that. It was about a pilot that flies in that area and his balloon went down in the mountains.

Another would be running camera for one of three remote sites for a vascular surgeon’s conference. We would set up in a hospital (normally there would be two or three across the country) cath lab and broadcast two or three vascular surgeries that were beamed to a vascular conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.

How did you handle it?

On the balloon flight over the divide I guess I didn’t grasp the potential hazard that we really faced as the pilot of the balloon I was in said we have encountered a rotor problem. I really didn’t know what that meant but it could have been dangerous considering we were flying over the Rocky Mountains.

In the live surgeries it was just amazing to see these surgeons work and be able to talk to an audience states away about what they were doing.

What do you see as important skills/character traits for people starting out in this field?

Ability to work with different personalities, ability to do different tasks – no matter how many years experience you have in a certain area don’t ever let that get in the way of doing a different role on a project if hired by a different production group. Be willing to be a grip if that is what the project calls for and you know you could be the camera person or audio etc. There are some projects I want to be a part of and it doesn’t matter what role I play in the project. Be a Team player and lead by example.

What advice would you give someone just starting out in your field?

Never stop learning. Technology will continue to change how video professionals and other creative people go about their jobs and try to stay current. Be good at several things but find a niche and be the best at that. Also, don’t ever think you’re too big or too good to do that job. If a job means you have to take out the trash take out the trash; expect to pay some dues. We all had to at one time. Find a mentor and learn from them.

Is there a role model or mentor who has impacted your career choices? If so, please describe.

Not really, I got into media way back in high school. Mass communications has been something I’ve wanted to do early on. It just took trying different jobs to get me to where I’m at now.

What role does/has MCA-I played in your career? Why do you remain involved?

Early on MCA-I, then called ITVA, provided some opportunities to go to trade shows that the Chicago or St. Louis Chapters put on. We held various trainings in our own chapter when it was viable. Also, I learned things when judging other chapters’ work on their video contests. I currently remain a member because it looks good on resumes, and to be part of a recognized professional organization.

Anything else you’d like to address about your livelihood/career?

I’ve been blessed with people who came into my life at the right time to assist me with opportunities. They were not mentors or even people I knew closely; they just knew of me and contacted me when they heard of potential job opportunities. Once you get established and work with different crews you tend to get call backs on freelance opportunities because of work skills or working well/getting along with others. There are a lot of people out there that do what we do and do it well, so your character, ability to work with others and at times be a team player keeps you a wanted commodity. I turn 50 this month and I’ve spent 32 years in the communications field so I feel blessed that I’m still doing what I’m doing in some form or fashion & I’m loving it, to quote a McDonalds tag line.

President's Report: Another MCA-I Opportunity to Learn Brian Alberth, Madison President MCA-I	March has certainly come in like a Lion. So much going on it is hard to find time to compose a report. But, I wanted to talk a bit about what it means to be a part of a professional association that is geared toward helping members be the best they can possibly be in their careers. One of the things we do as a group is review the entries in the annual MCA-I Media Festival. Being on a judging panel is one of the best educational opportunities we provide to our members. It is truly a win-win. The entrants get valuable feedback – either by receiving an award, or by reading the written comments from the judges. The judges get to see creative ways to communicate…some hit the mark, some don’t…but either way, they learn from the experience. We’re notifying the winners of the 43rd Annual MCA-I Media Festival this week and hope to see some of you at the Screening Party in Las Vegas next month on April 9th. Come in early for the MediaProCamp and stay for the Happy Hour Style Party which will also honor some long-time MCA-I volunteers.

Mike Brueggemeyer is the new President of the San Diego chapter of MCA-I.

What do you do? Give us a little description of your job.

I am a Director, but most of the time I am a one man band. I write, shoot, produce, direct and edit, with a little AfterEffects thrown in for good measure.

What types of projects do you work on?

I primarily make local commercials, and recently I have been making short films, just for pleasure. I am part of a group, Amalgamated Grommets, and we have participated in the 48 Hour Film Project for the last five years, and we have won the San Diego competition in three of them.

How did your previous jobs prepare you for your current position?

I have been on staff as a Producer/Director at other companies, and now I’m a freelancer. It is always terrifying for everything to be resting on my shoulders, and as a small business person, all of the business stuff is way outside of my competence zone, but I’m muddling through.

What do you like best about your job/career?

In your opinion, how does technology affect our creative opportunities?

In the past ten years, technology has made our business absurd. The company I was with in 2003 bought a Sony 730 camera, which was an HDCam camera which shot 30 frames per second only. With the lens and the viewfinder, it cost about $80,000. Three years ago I bought a Canon T2i camera, which cost $850, and it creates better images than the Sony, at 1/100 of the price. I edit on an iMac, shoot with a DSLR, and my commercials are all over the TV. The technology is there for anyone to be a production company, and now the only differentiator is ability/talent/skill.

What was the most rewarding project you've worked on and what made it so rewarding?

I got the opportunity to pitch an advertising campaign for a local credit union. This job was much bigger than anything I’ve worked on in years, and I got the job! They loved my creative and execution, and they are bringing me back for this year’s campaign! All because they liked my scripts!

What was the most unusual or challenging project you ever worked on?

I am part of a group, Amalgamated Grommets, and we have participated in the 48 Hour Film Project for the last five years, and we have won the San Diego competition in three of them. It is a competition to see who can make the best film in a weekend. You are assigned a genre on Friday evening at 7 PM, and turn in the completed film at 7 PM on Sunday. Terrifying.

How did you handle it?

Being a one-man band, I know how to accomplish something with a minimum of wasted effort. Having 20 years experience provides me with the skill to tell a story well. And being a communicator allows seamless production with the entire crew.

What do you see as important skills/character traits for people starting out in this field?

Strangely, for a person starting out, the most important skill is to be at the location, on time, every day. If you know how to disassemble a RED camera, but are 20 minutes late, you’re still not there when you’re needed.

What advice would you give someone just starting out in your field?

Tell stories. Make mistakes. Find passion projects and throw yourself into them. Us old pros in the field do pay attention to the up and comers, and we check out websites and links. If you have a cool skate video on your YouTube channel, I’ll check it out.

What role does/has MCA-I played in your career? Why do you remain involved?

I am a poster child for MCA-I! In 2002 I was working on staff at the cable company making TV commercials, and it was pretty dreadful. I happened to look up a friend of mine on the internet, and he was a member of MCA-I. I went to the chapter website and discovered that they were having a Member Showcase the following week. This is an opportunity to show your work and see the work of others. I called the chapter president and he said that they could fit me in if I delivered a reel to one person, delivered a check to another person, and filled out paperwork with another person, by the close of business. I did that, and at the showcase, someone saw my work, and the next time he had an opening, he hired me at a substantial raise! I continue to appreciate the professionals involved in MCA-I, and learn from them constantly.

Anything else you’d like to address about your livelihood/career?

One of our 48 Hour Film Project films was screened at the Cannes Film Festival, and that festival is a nightmare, run by incompetents. That is all.

Give us a little description of your job. I’m a major “hyphenate”. Producer-Writer-Director-DP-Editor. What types of projects do you work on? Most of the projects I work on are used in the corporate world, but I also do some broadcast and commercial work when the opportunities come up. How did your previous jobs prepare you for your current position? The creative work I get to do in my career was borne out of a fascination as a young boy with film production, sound design, photography, graphic design and presentation technologies. My first job in this field proved to me that I could translate this hobby into a career; clients liked my work and sought me out. I can’t say that I enjoy everything about having my own business, but I do like that I get to do fun stuff… and get paid to do it! In your opinion, how does technology affect our creative opportunities? Technology is always changing how we go about our business. There’s an upside and a downside to this. The upside is that the changes are exciting, because there are always new things coming out to make the end product better. The downside is that there’s always a learning curve that goes with that new technology. Some of the stuff that we used to think was so important is now only useful in trivia contests. What was the most rewarding project you've worked on and what made it so rewarding? I do a lot of pro bono work for the organizations I’m involved with. MADISON, WI - Public Image Media of Madison, WI has partnered with Haban Media Works of Appleton, WI to offer local rental services of a Red Epic camera kit to Madison video producers.

The Red Epic camera is a high quality video camera and has been used to shoot such productions as “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “On Strangers Tides,” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” next year’s “The Amazing Spider-Man,” and Peter Jackson’s future mega-blockbuster “The Hobbit.”

“Before now, you could rent a Red camera kit here in Madison,” Greg Kuper, owner of Public Image Media said, “but it would have to be shipped here from a rental company located in Chicago, New York or LA. We’re local, and we’re a bit cheaper. So now you can rent from us.”

When asked why he’s ventured into the rental business, Kuper responded, “As a video producer myself, I always look to offer my customers options and solutions. A Red Epic is one of the highest quality cameras available. If the customer wants to pay for the quality, I now have the means to offer a solution. At the same time, my partnership with Haban Media Works allows me to offer solutions to my video producer colleagues, as well.”

And our Halloween gathering at the beach in Newport was too much fun. I also wanted to express my thanks for receiving the Chuck Webb Award this year. And to cap it off, I won the Grand Door Prize from Adobe. It was a super weekend.

For over 20 years ITVA and then MCA-I conferences have been the most valuable, enjoyable, and memorable part of my association with the members who make it up MCA-I. The local chapter conferences and get-togethers (or WetNets as we called them, a name probably borrowed from another Chapter I’m sure) are a smaller scale but just as important part of the value that, I believe, members get from being involved with others in their industry. I returned home from that MCA-I conference with a fresh, new approach to my work and memories of a great holiday. I'm so glad I caught The WAVE! I once again attended MCA-I Madison chapter's annual award show, for recognition in Web Audio Video Excellence (WAVE). I've been a member of this wonderful community for nearly a decade now, and currently serve on the board as Student Liaison. Ironically, I have been a member since I was a student myself! MCA-I helped me advance my own career and exposed me to our wealth of local talent over the years. Now, I am a part of our industry as an instructor at Madison Area Technical College, and MCA-I helps me keep up to date with the latest technology to teach, supplies me with presenters for my classroom, and serves as possible internships and jobs for my students. So, this year at The WAVE Awards I had a group of my students with me at this event - to help connect them with future employers, and to give them an idea of what the professionals in our area can do. In addition, two of my students won the first two scholarships that our chapter has offered, and their acceptance of their large checks, both literally and physically, brought tears to my eyes. In addition, several other students were recognized in the student categories, and all were recognized and congratulated by the professionals afterwards. Seeing that interaction between my students and their future was the best award that I could have received. I am very grateful for my Madison chapter of MCA-I, and everything that it does for our community and industry!

MCA-I ProTrack 2007 in Milwaukee! What a great time. The sessions were great, as usual. And it was wonderful to reconnect with friends from all over the country and make a bunch of new contacts.

From dawn to way past dusk, we were learning the ins and outs of new techniques and technologies, power networking, and generally have a ball. A couple of sessions left many of us with our jaws open in amazement at the future of communications. It certainly has given me a lot to think about and some new tools to take the next steps as we move into a new reality. Oh, and the weather was unbelievably beautiful in Milwaukee, too

I've been in the media communications business since the late 70's and have seen a lot of changes, but never so fast and furious as right now. One of the best ways to stay on top of the trends is to come to professional development conferences like MCA-I ProTrack.

Let the evolution begin! I can't express my joy enough from watching the new generation of MCA-I Leadership develop their new relationships and form a bond that should be the nucleus of our future successes. Their energy and enthusiasm was contagious! How many of us found ourselves out late past our bedtimes, shakin' our tail feathers at the Safe House and feelin' our oats while hanging out with this new, young and energetic group? And it wasn't just about the fun factor, these young'ns contributed great ideas to our Leadership Conference and really appreciated their opportunities during the ProTrack sessions. Our experience in Milwaukee was fantastic on so many fronts, I applaud our fearless leader Mike Brown, the Board of Directors and everyone else who's efforts contributed to the success of what I consider one of the best Conferences MCA-I has ever hosted. Congrats to all of us!

Once again -- the first time was at the board retreat in January 2007 -- I was struck by how much talent, generosity, and can-do energy we have as a goup. It's no wonder MCA-I is on the comeback trail, re-emerging as an important network for media communications professionals. ProTrack reaffirmed my pride in our team. Additionally, and for the first time in a long time, we had a strong contingent of twenty-somethings at the leadership conference, people with new ideas and the drive to implement them. It was truly exciting. The challenge for those who came to ProTrack will be to convey to those who didn't the hope and excitement we experienced, and to make them want to invest in the new MCA-I.

Since the ProTrack Conference, I’ve been “pitching” ways to re-purpose content that my company has already produced. Several of my clients are very interested in the podcasting & webcasting information I’ve brought back. Also, beyond the “creative boost” one experiences being around other chapter members and the seminar experts, I realized the network of contacts I’ve made will be great resources for one of my upcoming original productions that will require me to travel across the country.
