MCA-I Member Profile for April 2008 - Life Member Bob Kemper

A Member Profile By Dennis Regan, Writer and Voiceactor MCA-I Member, San Diego For thousands of patients with developmental disabilities, Bob Kemper is a good friend. As coordinator of media services, he served them for 30 years by documenting their care and providing a practical training tool to help prepare the caregivers who looked after their needs at the OBerry Center in Goldsboro, North Carolina. DR: Bob, your particular service is rather unique amongst MCA-I membership - serving in the public sector in a healthcare facility. How did you happen to get the job? BK: I answered an ad in a magazine. It was the Journal of Mental Deficiency. DR: Not too many of us would have a copy of that on our coffee table. BK: I was at Central Wisconsin Center. Some folks in the library caught that ad and said Bob, this would be perfect. You can get off the soft government grant money and go for the hard money. I said it sounds good to me.
40 Years Later Early MCA-I (ITVA) Leaders Meet in Las Vegas

Back row, left to right: Steve Kultala (Pres. 1984-85), Jeannie Tasker (Vice Pres. 1978-79), Gib Gibson (Pres. 1977-78, Billy Bowles (Pres. 1978-79), Al Bond (Pres. 1979-80), Lynn Yeazel (Pres. 1973-74). Front row, left to right: Bob Passaro (Pres. 1976-77), Kal Edwards Raasch(Pres. 1975-76), Ron Brown (Pres. 1981-82), Rita Sansone (Pres. 1982-83). NOTE: Empty chair, far left, front row for the late Bob McEmber (Pres. 1974-75), and for Chuck Webb, lifetime member and mentor of all. It was pure coincidence but indeed the stars were aligned the evening of February 18, 2008 as some of the very earliest leaders of MCA-I (ITVA as it was called when they were leading) gathered in Las Vegas for a long talked about reunion. Calling themselves the Old Fs, they have maintained contact over many years, primarily via email. The list of attendees read like kind of a Whos who of the early ITVA. All but one a past president of ITVA, and that one exception served as a regional director and...

MCA-I ProTrack - What's the Value to Me?

by Steve King, Auckland, New Zealand MCA-I Board of Directors International Relations Chair My favourite, and still used, lesson from the last MCA-I conference I attended was this, The more you try to tell people in a video, the less they’ll know. I was introduced to the MCA-I about 20 years ago, when it had a New Zealand chapter of over 400 members. The first national conference I attended here in New Zealand ran a number of seminars over 3 days, had guest speakers from the US and England, a trade show and finished with an Media Festival Awards banquet and party on the final night. The following year, I convinced my boss at the corporation where I managed the newly established video department (as well as produced, shot, edited, etc.), to send me to New Orleans for my first ITVA International Conference – a trip which shaped my future career. Returning home inspired, and with a concrete business plan for the department, I proceeded to expand and develop it to...

Your Attendees are on a Great Candids Video by Mark Schulze Crystal Pyramid Productions’ top videographer, Mark Schulze, shoots Willie Nelson and Darryl Hannah at the National Biodiesel Conference & Expo 2006 in San Diego. Courtesy: Crystal Pyramid Productions I first learned how to edit about a hundred years ago (or so it seems, given the exponential rate at which technology has advanced) on half-inch linear machines. That meant that if you finished editing a half-hour show and spotted a mistake at the beginning, you would have to start all over again. It was a time-consuming and cumbersome process that did not lend itself to many of the applications so commonly used today, such as, for instance, candids videos. With the arrival of mobile nonlinear editing systems, the genre of candids — aka happy-face — video evolved, and it’s become routine at many corporate events.
The New York Chapter’s third try at co-producing an event with another organization proved to be a charm. The March 11 reception and panel discussion, Maximize Training Effectiveness Using Today’s Media, presented by MCAINY and ASTDNY (American Society of Training and Development, New York), and hosted by Deutsche Bank at its sleek Wall Street headquarters, drew 70-plus attendees and glowing reviews. Creative Media Productions, Smith Barney, the Hess Corporation, The Mulvaney Group, and the New York City Transit Authority were represented on the panel. In the audience were a variety of media creatives and decision makers from Deutsche Bank, American Express, Microsoft, Pfizer, Bexel, and other leading corporations.
MCA-I: Professional and Proud of It

by Lee Vogel President MCA-I 2008 From time to time members who have long belonged to the association seem saddened by the fact that our numbers are no longer in the thousands like they were in the 1980s and early 90s. What they forget however is that 1) most of those memberships were paid by corporations employing the members and 2) many of those members were not actively involved in the association. Today we are about 800. Most of us are entrepreneurs. As such, most of us are paying our dues out of our own pocket. The time we take to volunteer, to go to meetings- is time we don’t get paid for unlike the majority of corporate producers of yesteryear. I recently experienced three things over the course of one day which brought home the value of membership in this association. Our local Kansas City MCA-I meeting was a presentation of experiences using the P2 format. It was a small group, nine or so. There would have been two more except projects came up at the last minute...

Cheers! A toast to 2008 and MCA-I’s 40th anniversary!

by Laurie Clark MCA-I Secretary A toast to 2008 and MCA-I’s 40th anniversary! Forty years is a major milestone and we should be proud of what we’ve accomplished. But in order to secure a strong future for our organization, we as members, need to become more active at the international level. With so many things vying for your attention, MCA-I might have fallen off your radar screen. It’s time to check back in. There are so many exciting new initiatives and we’re making a strong effort this year to increase membership, but you are the key to making this happen. Have you ever asked a professional if they’d be interested in joining MCA-I? Why are you a member? I would guess that majority of you, if asked what you most enjoyed about being a part of MCA-I, would say the camaraderie and networking opportunities. Its an organization that offers the opportunity for new work and to make new friends in the industry. And everyone can always use more friends, right? I think...

Dynamic Media Business Trends Analysis - No. 9, January 2008

Dynamic Media Business Trends Analysis (1) No. 9, January, 2008 INDUSTRY OVERVIEW The do more with less imperative continues, though do more seemed to be the key words last year. In a reversal of trends full time contractors are being converted to full time staff positions and there are also outright staff increases. For the most part, staff or contractors who retire or resign have been replaced. Certainly there have been hiring freezes as well, but the work goes on requiring contractors, freelancers and outside production companies to fill the gaps. Contractor staff managers at both Morgan Stanley and Verizon were hired as full-time employees during 2007. The rationale appears to be that increased demands for media, driven to a large extent by Webcasting, are not seen as temporary phenomenon, but a continuous stream of connected events that require full-time dedicated staff. Looking ahead, however, we cannot ignore the spreading impact of the credit problem. Is it more perceived...

MCA-I: Sharing Secrets for 40 Years

by Lee Vogel President MCA-I 2008 When the cost of video production equipment dropped to the point where corporations could afford their own in-house production facilities, a new profession of media communicators was born. But where would these non-broadcast TV producers come from? Where would they learn their skills? Unlike similar professions, there were no college courses or degrees in Corporate TV. They came from broadcast stations, marketing, training departments, and advertising agencies. They learned their skills, well, on the run. 40 years ago, the Industrial Television Society was just beginning. This group, along with the National Industrial Television Association, combined to form a unified association that would eventually become today’s MCA-I. They formed the association for the purpose of professional development through the sharing of experience. Basic knowledge of photography, audio recording had to be combined with continual learning of the...

Could we get that voice style for a voiceover? That was...

The Information Architecture Pyramid (Latest post from the DoingMedia Blog)

My friend Susan Reetz asked about her site keywording. She had her site analyzed at the Extreme Makeover: Website Edition session at the MCA-I ProTrack conference in September and the presenter (Susan Price from MediaRich) noticed that her site pages had no keyword or other meta tagging.
The Tech Effect by David Haneke, Opening Moments Media MCA-I Member, Arizona Tech Effect explores how the production of creative content and technology are converging to create revenue streams and convenience for creative messaging. This column features interviews with experienced production team leaders in the industry. The interviews will touch on both the creative content as well as innovative ways of reaching people using technology. This column is written from the Producer’s perspective, yet intended for everyone involved in the production process. This month we’ll tackle the value of HD for archiving critical events, as well as justifying the value of a Communications Group within a company.
A Member Profile By Dennis Regan, Writer and Voiceactor MCA-I Member, San Diego Paul Gore couldn’t wait to get out of the classroom and go to work. So he didn’t. He graduated SMU in 1980, but by then he had racked up countless hours as an intern for several Dallas area production companies. With degree in hand, and a list of carefully developed contacts stuffed into his back pocket, he launched himself into the business and an adventure that continues to lead him in and out of airports around the world. DR: Would you say you took the proactive approach to higher education? Lots of internships. PG: I did so many that the teachers told me, no more internships, Paul. Were not going to give you any more school credit. But, I asked them if I could go to production companies and shoot stills of their productions and put together a slide presentation. This was 1979, the time of the multi-media shows. I’d take the presentation back to the producers, giving them a sort of...

Update from ITVA - Japan

If you attended ITVA Conferences in the 80’s or 90’s, you may remember ITVA-Japan leader Jack Yoshimoto. Besides attending numerous ITVA Conferences in the U.S., Jack regularly brought several other Japanese ITVA members with him. It truly added an international feeling to the conference. This Summer, longtime MCA-I member Ron Osgood had an opportunity to meet with Jack in Tokyo. Ron reports, After many years, Jack has retired from NCR and is doing well. Besides having some time to meet with Jack, Ron and his wife Lilly were special guests at the Annual ITVA-Japan meeting. The speaker at the session I attended was a filmmaker. He was showing clips and discussing his work, which he cut on Final Cut Pro. I’d guess that there were 50 or so members. The membership was pretty diverse, just like in the US, says Ron. Jack, along with Yoshihiro Dairiki, coordinated this special opportunity. Yoshihiro has retired from Hitachi and now operates his own production...

MCA-I Bylaws Revised - July 2007

Change is a constant in our lives today. One of the Board's initiatives this year is to change the MCA-I tax status from a 501c6 to a 501c3. Part of that process involved making a few changes in the Bylaws. We are pleased to announce that the membership has approved these revisions.

So, what's different now?

1) Removed all language referring to "ITVA doing business as MCA-I." The final stages of the name change took place in March, and Media Communications Association-International is now the legal name of the association.

2) Refined the mission and goals of MCA-I to emphasize our focus on education and professional growth.

3) Refined the definition of Commercial Membership, to clarify eligibility, as well as the ability for companies to transfer membership.

4) Refined the definition of Student Membership to include specifications on who is eligible for this category of membership and requirements for renewing a student membership.

Jim Cunningham - MCA-I Member Profile for July 2007

A Member Profile By Dennis Regan, Writer and Voiceactor MCA-I Member, San Diego Jim Cunningham – Life Member - Chicago He started in the music business as an opening act, did some jingles. Then Jim got called in to do some sound mixing on a video project. That kind of opened the door to the world of production. And that ‘door’ swung wider than Jim could have imagined. With camera and laptop, he has ventured to some pretty exotic places – capturing B-roll in a Cairo bazaar. Shooting inside the cave that houses the Dead Sea Scrolls. And if you’ve been a seat partner to Jim on a plane returning from Africa, you won’t see him watching the movie, he’ll likely be editing an interview or creating a title graphic. I enjoy traveling and to go and be paid for it is even better. DR - So you were introduced to video production through the equipment? JC - I did work for Exxon. I really owe a debt of gratitude to them because they had new equipment - state of the art...

I really owe a debt of gratitude to them because they had new equipment - state of the art...</itunes:summary>
