Levitt 1946 - 2008 It is with great sadness that we announce that Joel Levitt, the founder and president of Action Duplication, passed away Saturday morning, April 26. As many of you knew, Joel had been fighting a brain tumor for the past year. A story about his life appeared in the Philadelphia Daily News on Monday, April 28, 2008. We have set up a page on our website where you can leave condolences, thoughts, prayers or memories for Joels family. Action Duplication’s employees and Board Members remain committed to the ideals and goals Joel worked so hard to achieve since founding the business. In his memory, we remain dedicated to providing you with the same high quality and customer satisfaction ethics that he instilled in us.
Forgotten Airplane's Take Wing Once Again In Screening By Atlanta MCAI Moviemaker

The distribution for this rare DVD about vintage airplanes begins with the screening.

"At a time in the shadow between the World Wars, the usefulness and reliability of airplanes in peacetime was questionable. So aircraft companies would show off their airplanes in the annual “National Air Tour.” In its time, this traveling parade was quite popular, showing off the potential of aviation to a wary public.” said Mr. Panayioto.

Seventy years later, a group of pilots came together with restored models and flew them on the same 26 city route as a part of the “Centennial of Aviation.” This story centers on their Atlanta stop. These aircraft live today thanks to the remarkable efforts of these determined aviators.

“Rare Vintage Air” is the second episode in the Forgotten Wonder’s Series, independently produced by Mr. Panayioto.
In Memoriam: Erik Villesvik

MCA-I member and Secretary of the OC/LA Chapter, John Erik Villesvik, died suddenly on March 24, 2008 of a massive coronary. He was 53. Erik’s passing was a shock to his family, all of whom lived outside California, as well as all his friends and associates in MCA-I. He had recently returned from an MCA-I National Leadership conference in early March, where he made new friends with representatives of many other chapters from around the US. Information about what happened was very sketchy at first to his local friends and colleagues. Meanwhile, hundreds and hundreds of emails burned up the internet between members of the MCA-I and others in the media production community. All expressed shock and sadness at his passing and praised him in many personal stories. Then we heard from Erik’s family about a service. An evening memorial service was held on April 2nd in Santa Ana, California. It was well attended by family and friends. Erik’s mother and two of his sisters...

New Edition of Barry Hampe's Making Documentary Films and Videos

Making Documentary Films and Videos, Second Edition by Barry Hampe, published in December by Henry Holt and Company, is a total revision of the classic guide to making documentaries that has been one of the top books on documentary filmmaking for more than a decade. The original edition helped a lot of people make their first documentary, Barry said. For instance, I was at Silverdocs, the documentary festival, a couple of years ago and a woman came up to me and said ‘Barry, I read your book, then I made a documentary, and I just sold it to HBO. She was Victoria Bruce, who made ‘The Kidnapping of Ingrid Betancourt.’ Barry felt it was time for a new edition for several reasons. One is that the technology has changed tremendously. Today with high quality, low cost, digital cameras and inexpensive desktop editing systems, the cost barrier to making a documentary has been completely blown away, and, he said, You can make a doc for lunch money. Another is the...

Connie Terwilliger, long time voice talent with clients around the globe was one of the top three vote getters in the completely unofficial auditions for the announcer’s job on NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams. The contest was hosted by Peter K. O’Connell (audio’connell Voice Over Talent). More than 60 nominations were submitted by professional voice talents in just four days. Voters were asked to pick their top three choices from the submitted auditions, ranked in order of preference. How fun! This was a great experience, said Connie. I voted too of course, and what a challenge to select just three from the really great samples that were submitted. Dave Houston garnered the most votes and the top prize - a new USB microphone donated by a voice talent who requested anonymity. Bruce Miles came in second place. Listen to the audioconnell podcast announcement with interviews here. O’Connell joined a chorus of voices on the web who were disappointed by the vocal performance...

Crystal Pyramid Productions Documentary Airs

When I was a girl growing up in Chicago and Detroit, I remember spotting down-and-out men furtively lurking in the shadows of the streets. They were called "bums" back then, as they were generally thought of as drunks too lazy to find a job. In the ensuing decades, this population of homeless people has burgeoned for many reasons, and in San Diego where I now live, you will see entire city blocks lined with people who can no longer afford to pay for housing. This population is comprised of men, women, and children; 30% or more of our homeless are veterans. They are not all drunks, and they are not all too lazy to find work.

My partner and I decided to produce a short documentary that would shed some light on the homeless problem here in San Diego, as it is a scene repeated across our nation. "Small Acts of Kindness" features David "The Water Man" Ross, a retired car salesman who buys several cases of water every day from his social security check and delivers it to the homeless. Also appearing are Congressman Bob Filner, Chair of the Veterans Committee, and Rachel Jensen, Founder of Girls Think Tank, a group of young people who bring aid to the homeless. The soundtrack is a song called "Jenny" by Tom Yarborough, a Viet Nam veteran and homeless advocate. (www.tomyarborough.com)

This five-minute video packs a big wallop for its size and recently won a gold Ava Award. It is due to appear several times on San Diego's Channel 4, part of a show called "So You Made A Movie." An earlier incarnation of the movie appears at youtube.com.

Producing this show opened our eyes to the reality of the homeless situation; these are human beings with hearts and souls. They provide a wonderful opportunity for all of us to open our minds and together create real solutions to the problems of poverty in America.

"Small Acts of Kindness" was produced by Patty Mooney and Mark Schulze, Crystal Pyramid Productions, San Diego, California. (www.crystalpyramid.com)

The Stories logo competition: A winner by any other name...

New York, NY – If you have been following the progress of the online competition, sponsored by Design 21 Social Design Network to find a logo for the Stories from the Field film festival, you no doubt know that we were expecting to declare a winner on December 11, 2007. We regret that no such winner can be declared. We know there will be confusion and disappointment about this outcome, which was announced last night by Design 21, and we want everyone – our community and the hundreds of designers who participated in the competition – to know what happened, and to understand why, although we made a final choice, we cannot declare a winner. By the competition deadline of November 27 – an extended deadline of 24 hours, by the way, because the Design 21 servers had been overwhelmed by the rush of entries on November 26 – over 1,600 designs had been submitted, the largest showing ever for any Design 21 competition. They and we were ecstatic. On November 28, the Design 21 panel began to...

Kerry McCall Productions Launches CupCakes For The Tribe Podcast

Kerry McCall Productions announces the launch of the new CupCakes For The Tribe podcast.

Cupcakes For The Tribe - Short Delicious Morsels of News and Info for the Digital Nation - is an entertainment, information and variety podcast produced by Kerry McCall Productions and AudioFizz.com. Regular episodes will feature a variety of stories and interviews spanning the topics of culture, society, entertainment and celebrities, news, technology and more. Interviews and a segment called the Urban Dictionary, which provides definitions of slang terms, are regular features of the show. The podcast is a lighthearted approach to providing interesting, informational, sometimes thought provoking, a little bit entertaining, and maybe even occasionally educational perspectives of our world.

AudioFizz.com founder and female voice talent, Kerry McCall, developed the concept for the podcast after searching for programs of a similar nature to listen to while commuting or working out at the gym. “I’ve always been interested in cultural news,” she says, “and mostly for the types of stories that are sometimes a little off-beat or on some subject you always wanted to know a little more about, or perhaps may never have thought about. The beauty of podcasting is the freedom to produce any type of show you can imagine or want to create and on any topic. It’s complete freedom – and a blast.”

With over 20 years of experience in writing and producing a variety of audio shows, Kerry is able to bring an elevated standard of production to each episode. Utilizing music, creative editing and audio processing techniques along with a relaxed and friendly presentation of the materials offered, CupCakes For The Tribe gives listeners an entertaining diversion from the common news story.
Stories Logo Competition Generates over 1,700 Entries Worldwide ~ Design 21 and MCAI NY Begin Search for a Winner

New York, NY, November 28, 2007 -- By a week before the Monday, November 26, 11:59 p.m. UTC deadline, there had been over four hundred Stories from the Field logo design entries submitted. By the day before, that number had jumped to over a thousand. Hours later, the contest servers began to stagger under the weight of entries, returning error messages and causing the under-the-gate crowd to think they had missed the deadline. Frantic phone calls and emails began to pour in from those parts of the world closer than New York to the deadline. The server was not accepting entries; had the deadline been changed? The contest organizers spent Monday morning fielding inquiries, assuring all that the error was on the server side and the deadline would be extended by a day to make sure everyone got a chance to resubmit. By the new deadline, over 1,700 entries had been uploaded, the largest showing ever for any Design 21 competition. The entries have now closed and the judging has begun....

MCA-I Madison Awards Scholarships to Media Communication Students

The MCA-I Madison Scholarship is awarded annually to two students who are enrolled in a Wisconsin accredited College or University and are pursuing careers in a media communications related field.

With this scholarship program, MCA-I Madison hopes to increase student involvement in the organization, introduce creative and talented students to possible future employees in the community and provide financial support to students.

MCA-I Madison awards two scholarships of $1,000 each which are funded by money raised from the Silent Auction at the WAVE Awards Banquet. The two students are honored at the WAVE Awards Banquet in November.

The 2007 recipients are Denise M. Hardnett and Michael Sweet, both students at Madison Area Technical College. Denise hopes to use her education to do design work for non-profits, give back to the community, and help support her three daughters. This scholarship will help her earn her associates degree in Visual Communications. Grateful for the award, Denise explains that, “A lot of companies or organizations will want you to have the education behind you.”

Michael’s career goals involve having his writing published, producing, directing, and acting in his own films. When asked about the value of his education, Michael says,”…life is a whole lot easier when you have experienced professionals imparting their knowledge to you.” Michael plans to graduate in May of 2008 also in Visual Communications.

To help fund this scholarship, please consider donating items to the Silent Auction at the WAVE Awards Banquet. Email Lois Weiland at loiswei@aol.com for more information.
