Pamela Rucinski and Susan Reetz of Rucinski & Reetz Communication, LLC (Mosinee, WI) recently received two awards from the Madison chapter of the Media Communication Association – International’s media festival, the WAVE Awards.

Is There a Leader In You!? Consider the MCA-I Board of Directors

The MCA-I Nomination Committee is searching for candidates for the 2012 International MCA-I Board of Directors.

As chapter leaders have discovered, the International Board is composed of member volunteers who want to help keep the association moving forward to serve all of our chapters and At Large members. Clearly we all have lots on our plates, but volunteering in a professional association pays off in so many ways.

Getting involved is a great way to build your network, gain valuable experience in leadership skills, and participate in the traditional good times. We have a part-time Executive Director who handles membership duties and tries to keep us on the right and proper path now that we are a 501(c)3 group. But the rest of the board and all of the other chapter boards are volunteers. So we need you - or someone you know.

If you are interested - or know someone who is interested or you think would make a great addition to the board, please let the Nominating Committee know. They will take it from there!

OC Chapter Partners Up for Success

Summer months seem to be the hardest for finding good meeting topics and drawing a crowd. The Los Angeles/Orange County Chapter of MCA-i has made partnering with other local organizations a staple of its planning process with great success—year ‘round. This July, formerly a low attendance month, MCA-i held our second annual summer BBQ with the Professional Videographers Network (PVN). Really, we’ve tagged onto PVN’s annual summer event but together have made it bigger and better than before. Besides sharing the work, the P/L and promotion efforts, MCA-i’s OC Chapter has pushed for better, broader-based featured speakers which has boosted attendance. Based on past success, this year the two groups expanded the BBQ to include a professional equipment Swap Meet as well as the keynote speaker. Both orgs see no reason to not continue this annually. MCA-I 2011 Demographics Survey: Results show buying patterns remain steady, but job descriptions converge.

So what do today’s media communications professionals look like? Well, they appear to wear a lot of hats. The percentage of Director / Producer / Executive producers decreased from the 2006 survey by about 5%, Cinematographers decreased by about 8% and Corporate Management decreased by almost 9%. At the same time, a new category “Wear Multiple Hats” in the 2011 survey garnered 22% - which coincidentally (?) is the same percentage as those other categories decreased. Please note that not all respondents answered all questions, so the percentages used here in this summary give a big picture result. The survey was also anonymous, so some of the results cannot be correlated directly to each respondent. Of the 241 responses, the majority (58%) of the participants identify themselves as MCA-I members (mostly Individual members); Twenty six percent as past members of MCA-I; and sixteen percent have never joined MCA-I.
