41st Annual MCA-I Media Festival Winners Announced

Congratulations to our profession's brightest stars. As usual, the quality of all of our Golden, Silver and Bronze Awards is outstanding. As a benefit of membership, MCA-I Members may view the winning entries online in the Media Festival Gallery. (Look for the navigation link under Festivals/Awards when all entries have been uploaded. You must be logged in to see the entries.)

The Golden Reel celebrates excellence in media communications. The name stands for creativity and advancement in technical applications. Since 1978, Golden Reel honors have been highly coveted and recognized internationally for their prestige.

This year the nearly 90 entries were judged through an online competition. While technology has advanced, the process proved somewhat of a deterrent to some who wished to enter. Additionally, feedback on the online judging process, which is traditionally a time for media professionals to gather face-to-face, indicated a return to a more traditional festival for the near future.

What will be different is that all entries in the 41st MCA-I Media Festival will be hosted online and available to members on demand for at least a year, thanks to Multicast’s Media Suite.

Guy Fieri from DD&D records VO at Creative Media Recording

Noted chef and host of the hit Food Network television show “Diner’s, Drive-Ins and Dives” was recently in the Cypress studios of Creative Media Recording to do some voiceover recording. The energetic TV host travels the nation in search of the hidden gems of independent “mom and pop” restaurants that serve great food. Guy Fieri calls it “real food from real people.”

Fieri was in West Orange County the second week of February filming segments for DD&D. Page Productions, the producers of the show, contracted with CMR to record voiceover elements for two complete episodes that were nearly finalized and ready for airing. The producer of the program listened in via digital phone patch and the completed audio files were uploaded to an FTP server for use by the video editors. The voiceover covered episodes that were shot in Hawaii, Santa Cruz and other spots in the U.S.

***********

Other recent projects include complete audio “sweetening” for an independent short film titled “The Bourne Stupidity,” a spoof on the well known action series. The film was directed by Michael Harrington and is being submitted to various film festivals around the world. CMR provided action sequence sound effects and foley effects of punches and kicks along with ADR to clean up some voice segments by the actors involved. The original sound, shot on location in Southern California, was “sweetened” to make it more understandable and to balance out audio levels. Tim Keenan then provided a mix of these elements for the video editor to incorporate back into the video edit.

This allows direct-to-the-timeline recording with real-time, broadcast-quality audio using her high-speed internet connection.

San Diego MediaPro Camp a Big Hit

Four of us packed into a car, coffee in hand, and sped south into the early morning rain to attend the MCA-I San Diego Chapter's first MediaPro Camp. It was well worth the trip. The venue was one of the state-of-the-art education centers of the Art institute of California. And what we got was a wonderful day of collaboration with some top professionals of the media industry. Even at registration, we started making new acquaintances and catching up with a few old friends. I got to finally meet Raegan Matthews, who works at Digital Post in Carlsbad and with whom I must have spoken a hundred times on various MCAI web-calls. These MCA-I leadership calls include members from all around the country so she may as well have been in Detroit! Getting to say hello in person and put a face with the voice was fun. And of course, the nature of the business means that we go where the work is. So, I got to catch up with some folks with whom I have shot in the wilds of San Diego County and others...

Crews Control offers MCA-I Members a Free Lunch!

Crews Control: Proud New Platinum Sponsor of MCA-I Fulton, MD – Crews Control, the video industry’s leader providing on-location camera crews is proud to be the newest Platinum Sponsor of MCA-I. CEO Andrea Keating founded the crewing industry in 1988 and was chapter president of ITVA-DC over 20 years ago. “We here at Crews Control are delighted to support and be involved with MCA-I and are very pleased at how the organization has evolved the past few years. We are looking forward to becoming active members,” says Keating. Keating founded Crews Control at a time when the industry was dominated by a big studio, big production mentality. Her concept, providing qualified local camera crews to producers for corporate video shoots, was new and definitely different. While no one knew, including Keating herself, how producers would feel about hiring local crews in lieu of taking their own camera people on-location, she knew one thing: the economy was...

Multicast to Make MCA-I Media Festival Golden Reels Shine Online

Media Communications Association-International (MCA-I) is in the judging phase of the 41st Annual Media Festival. But this year, for the first time, the nearly 90 entries will be judged through an online competition, with all entries hosted online and available to members on demand for at least a year afterwards, thanks to Multicast’s Media Suite. Media Suite, considered the most complete, best integrated suite for using video, audio and rich media presentations to deliver messages that move people to action, will be the technology that provides access to MCA-I members’ best work. 2009 Festival Coordinator Gary Shifflet said “Multicast’s customized Media Suite will provide MCA-I a new conduit to showcase our award winners on a global platform. Typically after an awards competition, winning entries seldom have an opportunity to showcase the work and promote the award they’ve won. Through Multicast, MCA-I will now be able to provide access to showcase...
